OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra is reaching eligible ChatGPT accounts, but access depends on plan, product and rollout status, while usage limits vary sharply.

Key Points:

  • GPT-6 Astra powers GPT-6 Pro in regular ChatGPT for eligible Pro, Business and Enterprise users.
  • Plus gets Astra through Work and Codex, not regular Chat.
  • Complex Astra tasks can consume allowances faster than GPT-5.6 Sol.

GPT-6 Astra Access

OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 Astra on Sep. 3, but users will not always see the Astra name inside regular ChatGPT. Eligible Pro $100, Pro $200, Business and Enterprise accounts should instead look for GPT-6 Pro in the model picker, while Enterprise availability can also depend on workspace permissions.

Plus subscribers can select Astra inside ChatGPT Work or Codex after access reaches their account, and Codex CLI users need version 0.153.0 or newer.

Desktop access can lag. Users can switch from Chat to Work in the desktop app and choose Astra there, while OpenAI recommends manually checking for updates when the model remains missing. Work is rolling out separately across platforms, and even local Work sessions may store messages and task context in the cloud.

OpenAI Usage Limits

Astra can use the shared Work and Codex allowance faster than GPT-5.6 Sol because larger inputs, longer outputs, higher reasoning levels and multi-step tasks consume more capacity. OpenAI estimates about five to 45 local Astra messages per five-hour period for Plus, 25 to 225 for Pro $100 and 100 to 900 for Pro $200.

Chat limits are separate. Pro $100 users receive 50 GPT-6 Pro messages per week shared with GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, while Pro $200 users get 200 GPT-6 Pro messages per week. Settings > Usage shows current allowance and reset timing.

For developers, GPT-6 Astra costs $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, with higher rates above 272,000 input tokens, while OpenAI recommends focused prompts and only relevant files to reduce unnecessary usage.

Since the Sep. 3 launch, access has remained split across Chat, Work and Codex, so an eligible subscription has not guaranteed identical availability across every product. That split still shapes how users reach Astra.
