Cardano (ADA) has climbed 20% in seven days, but falling DeFi activity and weaker derivatives demand are raising questions about the rally’s durability.

Key Points:

  • ADA rose 20% over seven days while Cardano TVL fell to 272 million ADA.
  • DEX volume dropped 98% from Aug. 22, while open interest fell from $582.14M to $485.32M.
  • Analyst Austin Campbell called the rally an “easy fade” amid weak fundamentals.

Cardano DeFi Slide

ADA traded at $0.212 on Aug. 27, up 0.8% on the day, as crypto sentiment stayed strong after Bitcoin (BTC) moved to $80,000. Network activity told a different story. DeFiLlama data showed Cardano’s total value locked falling from 509 million ADA on Jan. 1 to 272 million ADA, a decline of 237 million tokens.

DEX volume fell from $56 million on Aug. 22 to $965,000, a 98% drop in five days. TokenTerminal data showed monthly network revenue declining from $20,000 in January to $8,000 in August, while the Dijkstra upgrade is intended to improve network speed and security. Its first phase is due in the fourth quarter.

Derivatives activity also weakened, with CoinGlass showing open interest falling from $582.14 million on Aug. 22 to $485.32 million after $18 million in liquidations through Aug. 27. Futures demand also cooled. The 0.89 long-to-short ratio showed shorts dominating, while futures trading volume fell 15% to $434 million.

Austin Campbell Warning

Austin Campbell, founder of Zero Knowledge, was not persuaded by the move. “Something that has no utility and no fundamental way to value it is maybe an easy fade, because it just caught a bid in the nonsense and went up more because there was zero liquidity on it,” Campbell said.

He said many altcoins without tokenization adoption are rising mainly because of their Bitcoin correlation, while Hyperliquid (HYPE) is an exception in his view.

The chart remains constructive for now. ADA is holding inside a rising channel, with the upper trendline pointing toward the 200-day exponential moving average near $0.24.

Support sits near $0.19, where the channel midline meets the 100-day EMA, while a positive and rising MACD continues to favor bulls if broader sentiment remains supportive.

The divergence has widened throughout 2026. Cardano’s TVL has fallen by 237 million ADA since Jan. 1, monthly revenue has dropped from $20,000 to $8,000, and DEX activity has retreated sharply even as ADA posted its 20% weekly rebound. The rebound has not reversed those network trends.
