Apple's iPhone 18 Pro Max will reportedly carry a 5,567mAh battery, roughly 10% larger than its predecessor, while the smaller iPhone 18 Pro gains almost nothing.
Key Points:
- Leaked Chinese certification filings list a 5,567mAh cell for United States iPhone 18 Pro Max models, against 4,288mAh for the iPhone 18 Pro.
- The Pro Max gain works out near 10% year over year, while the smaller Pro adds just 36mAh.
- A variable aperture main camera may or may not be exclusive to the larger handset, with leaks disagreeing.
iPhone 18 Pro Battery Filings Show Wide Split
Chinese regulatory filings listed the capacities last month, and a tipster known as Digital Chat Station spotted the entries inside the 3C certification database used for device approvals. The same paperwork puts the iPhone 18 Pro at 4,288mAh in United States trim, an increase of just 36mAh over the equivalent iPhone 17 Pro sold today.
Photographs of what is described as that battery cell later surfaced on a Korean blog.
Those images showed a 5,391mAh rating, matching the figure filed for Chinese versions of the larger handset, which still ships with a physical SIM tray. Side-by-side tallies put the Chinese gain near 12%, while American units, sold without a SIM tray since the iPhone 14 generation, climb about 9.4%.
Apple has said nothing about the numbers, and it rarely publishes raw capacities. Both phones should also draw on the A20 Pro chip, built on a 2nm manufacturing process, and on the company's third-generation C2 modem. Rumored LTPO+ displays would trim power draw further, so raw capacity alone will not settle which of the two handsets lasts longer in daily use.

Variable Aperture Camera Could Favor Pro Max
Cameras may open a second gap between the two models this autumn. Mark Gurman has described the coming Pro phones as the line's largest leap in camera hardware in some time, with a variable aperture main lens leading the changes.
One leaker indicated last fall that variable aperture might reach only the Pro Max, though no other source has since backed that claim. Current rumor roundups instead expect the 48-megapixel main camera on both Pro models to gain the mechanism, which gives users direct control over depth of field. A wider telephoto aperture and camera software features reserved for Pro buyers are also anticipated.
Apple Pro Max Battery Growth In Context
Apple is expected to unveil both handsets in early September, and the reported trade-off for the bigger cell is a thicker, heavier body. Retail sales should follow in the second half of the month.
Recent Pro Max battery gains look modest by comparison with that figure. Chinese iPhone 16 Pro Max units carried 4,685mAh, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max added 138mAh on top of that a year later. This year's rumored 568mAh jump would be roughly four times that step, and would mark the widest single-year increase the model has recorded.
