Elon Musk said SpaceX and Nvidia plan a 2027 Vera Rubin orbital launch, but both stocks fell, with Nvidia down 2.91% and SpaceX closing at $135.

Key Points:

  • SpaceX and Nvidia are targeting Q4 2027 for the first space-optimized Vera Rubin NVL72 launch, with broader scaling planned in 2028.
  • Nvidia closed at $208.48 on Aug. 24, while SpaceX finished at its $135 IPO price before slipping after hours.
  • Vera combines 88 custom Olympus cores with 1.2 terabytes per second of memory bandwidth for agentic AI workloads.

SpaceX Orbital AI

SpaceXAI will deploy Nvidia’s Vera CPU for agentic AI workloads, extending the chipmaker’s infrastructure toward orbital computing. Musk said on X on Aug. 24 that the space-optimized Vera Rubin NVL72 system is scheduled for launch in Q4 2027, with “significant scale” planned for 2028.

Musk said SpaceX worked with Nvidia on a lighter and denser rack design, adding, “Our design is significantly simpler, lower cost, denser and lighter than a traditional rack.”

Nvidia says Vera uses 88 custom Olympus cores and 1.2 terabytes per second of memory bandwidth. The CPU is the host processor for Vera Rubin NVL72, pairing with Rubin GPUs for accelerated AI workloads.

Nvidia Stock Pressure

Nvidia shares closed down 2.91% at $208.48 on Monday, extending their five-session decline to 5.95%, and the move came two days before the company’s Aug. 26 earnings report. Broader technology weakness also pressured the stock.

SpaceX shares fell 1.44% to $135, matching the June IPO price, then slipped another 0.22% to $134.70 in after-hours trading as investors looked past the announcement.

Nvidia Vice President Ian Buck has described Vera as purpose-built for agentic AI, where CPUs handle orchestration, tool calls and data movement around GPU workloads.

He said agents are creating “a new CPU moment in the AI factory,” explaining why Nvidia is expanding beyond GPUs.

Since its June listing, SpaceX has traded as high as $225.64 and fell to an all-time low of $104.83 on Aug. 3 before recovering to its $135 offer price. That range shows how post-IPO volatility remained a stronger short-term force than one partnership announcement.
