OpenAI is on track to exceed $40 billion in annualized revenue, nearly double its late-2025 run rate, as the company prepares for a possible Wall Street debut.
Key Points:
- OpenAI’s annualized revenue has climbed above $40 billion based on current performance, according to people familiar with the matter.
- AI coding software, subscriptions and an emerging advertising business are contributing to growth.
- Demand for Codex and ChatGPT Work has accelerated while OpenAI cuts some model prices amid competition with Anthropic and Chinese rivals.
OpenAI Revenue
Bloomberg reported Aug. 14 that OpenAI’s annual revenue run rate has passed $40 billion, citing people familiar with the private financial figures. The pace is roughly twice the level reported at the end of 2025.
Recent growth has come partly from the company’s AI coding products, while subscription sales, advertising and the core consumer business have also contributed, according to the report.
The company has also seen stronger demand for Codex, its coding agent, and ChatGPT Work, which handles a broader range of workplace tasks. OpenAI declined to comment. It has also cut prices on some models as it competes for customers focused on lower costs.

IPO Race
The revenue acceleration gives OpenAI a stronger financial backdrop as it considers a public listing, while Anthropic pursues its own market debut. Both companies have filed confidential IPO paperwork.
Bloomberg said Anthropic could list as soon as this fall, while the rival AI company said in May that its run-rate revenue had exceeded $47 billion. The comparison is imperfect because the companies may calculate the measure differently.
OpenAI also named a new chief revenue officer Thursday. It was the second appointment to the role in less than a year. In an internal announcement, co-founder and President Greg Brockman said annual revenue run rate increased more than 20% month over month in July.
The latest figure marks another major step from the end of 2025, when Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar said OpenAI finished the year with more than $20 billion in annualized revenue. The increase shows how quickly coding tools, subscriptions and newer commercial products have expanded the company’s revenue base ahead of a potential IPO.
