Anthropic is expected to pitch investors on an AI market exceeding $30 trillion as it prepares a potential record IPO that could raise more than $100 billion.

Key Points:

  • Anthropic is expected to present investors with a total addressable market above $30 trillion as it builds the case for a record public offering.
  • Bankers have discussed raising more than $100 billion at a valuation near $2 trillion, which would exceed the scale of previous IPOs.
  • Rapid revenue growth supports the pitch, while compute costs, political resistance and high borrowing costs remain significant risks for investors.

Anthropic IPO

The Wall Street Journal reported Aug. 25 that Anthropic's $30 trillion estimate represents the annual revenue it could theoretically reach if its AI models captured all relevant work they might eventually perform.

The figure would exceed the $28.5 trillion market opportunity presented by SpaceX before its IPO.

Anthropic could make its prospectus public before the end of August, while bankers have discussed raising more than $100 billion at a valuation near $2 trillion.

SpaceX raised $85.7 billion in June after Saudi Aramco's $25.6 billion 2019 offering had long served as the IPO benchmark. Anthropic would surpass both if the proposed terms hold.

Preliminary second-quarter revenue topped $11.5 billion and adjusted operating income turned positive, although the figures remain unaudited and heavy compute spending could return later quarters to losses.

Damodaran Valuation

The scale has drawn skepticism. The 191 technology companies in the S&P 1500 generated about $2.4 trillion in revenue last year. Aswath Damodaran, a New York University finance professor, previously said SpaceX's $26 trillion AI market estimate pushed into "fantasy land for AI."

Venture investor Chamath Palihapitiya has pointed to anti-AI sentiment, opposition to data centers and high Treasury yields as threats to the broader AI buildout. Texas, Pennsylvania and New York have tightened data center rules or scrutiny, while Anthropic relies on Amazon and Google for compute and reportedly plans to list negative AI sentiment among IPO risks.

Anthropic's annualized revenue run rate rose from about $9 billion in late 2025 to more than $65 billion by the end of July, following a May funding round that valued the company at $965 billion. Even its 2028 forecast of $190 billion to $200 billion would remain below 1% of the proposed $30 trillion market.
