OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days, giving the company another fast-growing revenue source ahead of an expected IPO.
Key Points:
- ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days.
- The platform is available in more than 40 countries, with self-service access expanding across several major regions.
- OpenAI says ads remain separate from ChatGPT answers and advertisers cannot access private conversations.
OpenAI Ad Growth
ChatGPT Ads are now available in more than 40 countries and used by tens of thousands of advertisers. On Aug. 31, OpenAI also began rolling out self-service access across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
The advertising business sits alongside consumer subscriptions, enterprise offerings and usage-based APIs, a mix the company calls its “diversified business model,” as it seeks to monetize a service with more than 1 billion weekly active users.
Ads appear for free users and Go subscribers. OpenAI said the placements are clearly labeled, remain separate from ChatGPT answers and do not influence responses. The company also said advertisers cannot access users’ private conversations.
The rollout gives OpenAI another way to generate revenue from people who do not pay for higher-priced subscriptions.
That matters because the free tier accounts for most ChatGPT users, leaving advertising as a potential bridge between broad consumer reach and the company’s commercial goals.

Anthropic Ad Criticism
The milestone adds another commercial line as OpenAI prepares for an expected initial public offering and faces pressure to support its $852 billion valuation. Digital advertising has long been a major profit engine for Google and Meta, making OpenAI’s expansion into the market strategically significant.
Anthropic, OpenAI’s chief rival, has attacked the strategy publicly. Earlier this year, the company used its first Super Bowl campaign to mock advertising inside AI chatbots, turning monetization into another point of competition between the two AI developers.
OpenAI said its next phase will add markets, formats, objectives, buying options and measurement capabilities, while testing more native ways for businesses to interact with consumers in ChatGPT. The company began testing ads in the U.S. in February. That means the $1 billion annualized run rate arrived roughly seven months after the pilot began.
