Cardano Reviews CIP-0197 Plan To Prepare ADA Wallets For Quantum Risk

Cardano (ADA) has put two security proposals under community review, including a post-quantum wallet design that could protect existing addresses without forcing users to migrate funds.

Cardano CIP-0197

Cardano highlighted the proposals Aug. 23 after Robert Phair, a Cardano Improvement Proposal editor, shared the latest review snapshot.

Cardano Foundation records show CIP-0197 and CPS-0034 were confirmed as candidates on Aug. 18 and remain open for technical feedback.

CIP-0197 targets a known weakness in Ed25519-based wallets, whose public keys could become vulnerable if sufficiently powerful quantum computers can run Shor's algorithm at scale. The proposal would add a zero-knowledge proof tied to the wallet seed while keeping the current address structure intact.

Its recommended first phase would keep classical signatures on-chain and let wallets, exchanges and indexers verify the new proofs off-chain. A later phase could move proof verification into the node, but the proposal says that would require a consensus change and smaller proof sizes.

CPS-0034 addresses a different risk. It proposes property-based Plutus Core conformance tests so teams building alternative Cardano nodes can check that their evaluators behave like the reference implementation.

Quantum Security

The proposals are still early in the review process, which limits their near-term market significance. Their importance is technical, because they test whether Cardano can add stronger security guarantees without disrupting existing users or narrowing support for alternative node implementations.

The quantum timeline remains uncertain. The National Institute of Standards and Technology says estimates for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer range from around 2030 to several decades away, while stressing that migrations to new cryptography can take years.

CIP-0197 is also explicitly an intermediate defense rather than a complete post-quantum migration.

Cardano's reviewers noted that broader technical work will still be required before the network can replace vulnerable cryptographic primitives across the system.

That work fits into Cardano Vision 2026, a research roadmap announced in Jun. 2026 with 15 initiatives across six technical areas, including scalability, zero-knowledge systems and post-quantum security. The program frames quantum resistance as a longer-term migration challenge rather than a single wallet upgrade.
