Elon Musk backed Cloudflare's forecast that non-human internet traffic could reach 1,000 times human levels within five years, after machines overtook humans in May.

Musk AI Forecast
Musk wrote on Aug. 9 that “AI agentic Internet traffic will obviously VASTLY exceed human usage. Not a close call at all.
Cloudflare’s forecast is accurate.” The post endorsed a forecast from Cloudflare Chief Financial Officer Thomas Seifert, who made the estimate during the company’s second-quarter earnings call, according to The Register.
Seifert said current trends could push non-human traffic to 1,000 times human traffic within five years. “If the current trends continue, we think in five years, non-human traffic will be as much as 1,000 times as much as human traffic,” he said. He added that humans would become “a rounding error on the internet” because machine traffic is growing so quickly.
Cloudflare had expected machine-generated traffic to surpass human throughput in 2027, but its measurements showed the crossover occurred in May 2026.

AI Traffic Data
Independent research broadly supports Cloudflare’s direction, although the studies measure different kinds of automated activity. HUMAN Security reported automated traffic grew eight times faster than human traffic in 2025, while AI-driven monthly volumes rose 187% from January through December.
The same HUMAN report said more than 95% of AI-driven traffic was concentrated in retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, and travel and hospitality.
ARK Invest has separately estimated AI could influence 25% of global online consumer sales and facilitate nearly $9 trillion in private consumption by 2030.
Other reports show bots already hold a large share of web activity. Imperva said automated traffic accounted for more than 53% of web traffic in 2025, while Fastly measured bots at 49% of January 2026 requests and classified 99% as unwanted or unverifiable.
The sequence shows how quickly the balance shifted before Musk’s Aug. 9 endorsement. Bots were already a majority in Imperva’s 2025 dataset, Fastly found near parity in January, and Cloudflare said machines had overtaken humans by May 2026.
