IBM will embed OpenAI's GPT-5.6 into its consulting platform and staff a dedicated AI practice, one month after a 25% single-day stock collapse.

Key Points:

  • IBM is folding OpenAI frontier models, Codex and ChatGPT Work into its IBM Consulting Advantage platform.
  • A dedicated OpenAI Practice will be staffed by thousands of consultants and engineers with expert-level certifications.
  • The deal lands one month after IBM shares fell 25% in the worst single trading session in company history.

IBM Consulting Advantage Absorbs GPT-5.6

IBM announced the partnership Thursday, naming financial services, government, telecommunications and retail as the first industries in scope.

The agreement folds OpenAI frontier models, along with the Codex and ChatGPT Work products, into IBM Consulting Advantage. That platform carries the company's consulting work to clients in finance, procurement and human resources.

Specialized units of engineers and consultants trained through the OpenAI Partner Network will deploy directly with customers in heavily regulated environments. IBM will also join OpenAI's Elite partner tier and open a dedicated OpenAI Practice staffed by thousands of consultants and engineers holding expert-level certifications.

Andy Baldwin Frames The Security Problem

Andy Baldwin, global senior vice president of IBM Consulting, said enterprises are investing quickly in AI but want practical ways to apply it across core operations.

The obstacle, he argued, is not access to the technology itself. It is secure integration at scale inside tangled corporate systems.

Denise Dresser, chief revenue officer at OpenAI, described the arrangement as combining transformation expertise with deployments tied to real business priorities. Both companies point to three focus areas: legacy workflows, application modernization and cyber defense.

The security strand extends IBM's earlier participation in the OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program. The companies plan to pair OpenAI models with IBM Autonomous Security, a multi-agent service built for coordinated response and intelligence. They say the joint work will cover model risk, application-layer flaws and governance gaps that surface once AI reaches production.

Arvind Krishna Rebuilds After Q2 Shortfall

The announcement follows a punishing stretch for the consulting and infrastructure giant, whose chief executive, Arvind Krishna, told investors in July that IBM had not adapted or moved quickly enough as large deals failed to close on expected timelines. Preliminary second-quarter revenue reached $17.2 billion, up 1%, while adjusted earnings landed at $2.93 a share against forecasts near $3.01.

Shares fell 25% on July 14, the steepest single-day drop in IBM's trading history, eclipsing the 23.7% loss recorded in the October 1987 crash. Management later trimmed full-year revenue growth guidance to a range of 4% to 5%. On Tuesday the company signed a $240 million multi-year deal with Together AI to run Nvidia HGX B300 systems on IBM Cloud, with capacity due in the first quarter of 2027.
