iPhone 18 Pro Chip Claim Misreads Where The Speed Gain Comes From

A widely shared leak crediting Apple's new A20 Pro chip with an 18% speed gain is drawing pushback less than a month before the company's next iPhone event.

A20 Pro Leak Sets An 18% Benchmark

The claim originated with Fixed Focus Digital, a leaker on the Chinese platform Weibo who posted supply chain feedback over the weekend. The account said the A20 Pro will run up to 18% faster and up to 30% more efficiently than the A19 Pro used in the iPhone 17 Pro. It also warned that supply of the foldable iPhone Ultra will be very limited when the device first ships.

That processor will be the first iPhone chip built on TSMC's 2nm node, replacing the 3nm process Apple uses today, and Apple is expected to be the first large customer on the line. The node introduces gate-all-around transistors, which wrap gate material around all four sides of a channel rather than three, tightening control over where current flows.

The leaker has a mixed record on Apple rumors. Even so, the numbers spread quickly across technology sites this week. They matched figures already reported for the node itself.

Jason Cross Questions The 18% Reading

Jason Cross, a senior editor who has covered Apple silicon for more than a decade, argued that the two figures describe a manufacturing process rather than a finished product. The 18% gain applies to an identical chip moved from the older node to the newer one, he wrote, while the 30% saving applies to that same chip held at the same clock speed.

The two benefits therefore do not arrive together, and Apple is redrawing the chip anyway, with changes to cores, cache and transistor count. Cross put his own guess nearer 15% on the processor cores, with graphics gains of 20% to 30%. Buyers running the phone flat out, he added, may see no power savings at all.

iPhone 18 Pro Features And Chip Costs

Away from silicon, the Pro models are tipped to carry a smaller Dynamic Island, made possible by moving Face ID components under the display, alongside a back that blends glass and aluminum more evenly.

Leaks also point to a variable aperture main camera, a wider aperture telephoto lens, a Camera Control button stripped of its touch-sensitive layer, and a Pro Max battery roughly 10% larger than last year's.

Cost has shadowed the A20 for months. Supply chain estimates in January put Apple's price near $280 per chip, about 80% above the A19 equivalent, and later reporting pointed to retail increases of $250 to $300 over the iPhone 17 Pro generation. A separate squeeze on memory prices has pushed component bills higher across the industry since last year.
