OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Financial Services, a finance-focused version of ChatGPT that combines GPT-6 Astra with built-in market data for bankers and equity researchers.

Key Points:

  • The product combines GPT-6 Astra with integrated financial datasets and tools for research, modeling and client materials.
  • Morgan Stanley and Evercore helped shape the service as design partners.
  • OpenAI plans to expand data coverage and move beyond investment banking and equity research.

OpenAI Finance Launch

Reuters reported Sept. 10 that OpenAI introduced ChatGPT for Financial Services for investment bankers and equity researchers, with Morgan Stanley and Evercore involved in designing the product.

The service is powered by GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI’s newest model, which the company says improves financial-data retrieval, reasoning and generated content.

Users can research across multiple sources, build financial models and create client materials such as pitchbooks using their firms’ own templates. Built-in datasets come from Daloopa, LSEG News, PitchBook, Crunchbase, Quartr and other providers, covering areas including earnings transcripts, financial statements and company fundamentals. OpenAI said it indexes the data on its own infrastructure to improve retrieval and citations.

Firms with existing subscriptions can also connect services including FactSet, S&P Global, Preqin and Datasite. The product builds on ChatGPT Enterprise controls, including role-based access and encryption, while compliance teams can export workspace logs into existing audit workflows.

Morgan Stanley View

Morgan Stanley and Evercore said their design work with OpenAI focused on using AI for company research, analysis and client advice. Morgan Stanley said the value of frontier research becomes tangible when it helps employees perform work that matters to clients.

The launch matters because financial institutions operate under stricter requirements around confidential data, governance and review than many general-purpose AI users.

OpenAI has positioned those controls, along with traceable financial data and source citations, as central to making the system usable inside regulated firms.

OpenAI said it plans to add more financial data and further train its models to identify, interpret and apply that information across analyst workflows. It also intends to expand the product beyond investment banking and equity research into other parts of financial services.

Morgan Stanley had already deployed OpenAI-powered tools in wealth management before this product launch, and OpenAI says more than 98% of its adviser teams use an internal AI assistant. That earlier rollout gives the new design partnership a practical backdrop, showing that major financial firms were already testing OpenAI systems before the company introduced a dedicated sector product.
