A major Ethereum (ETH) whale sold its entire 167,855 ETH position, worth $408 million, within five days even as the token rebounded above $2,500.

Key Points:

  • The whale sold 167,855 ETH worth $408 million after steadily routing funds to exchanges.
  • ETH recovered from below $2,400, touched $2,530 and returned above $2,500 despite the selling.
  • The move came after Ethereum finished August with its strongest monthly gain since July 2025.

Ethereum Whale Exit

Blockchain tracker Lookonchain had followed the unidentified holder as the wallet unwound a position assembled from multiple addresses. The entity received 167,855 ETH, valued at about $408 million, before it began sending the tokens to trading platforms at the start of September.

During the first two days, the whale deposited 70,739 ETH worth roughly $174 million across multiple exchanges, leaving about $237 million in the wallet. Lookonchain later said exchange deposits had reached about $253 million as selling continued, before reporting Sept. 4 that the holder had disposed of the full 167,855 ETH.

The whale completed the exit in five days. That made the episode notable not only for its size, but also for the market's ability to absorb a concentrated burst of supply without pushing ETH back below its recent lows.

Ted Pillows Outlook

ETH moved in the opposite direction during the final stage of the sale, rebounding more than 4% on the day after dipping below $2,400. The token reached an intraday high of $2,530 and later traded above $2,500, while its market capitalization stood near $305 billion.

CoinMarketCap data also showed Ethereum's market dominance moving above 11%. A rising dominance reading means ETH accounted for a larger share of total crypto market value even while one large holder was exiting.

Two days before the whale completed the sale, onchain analyst Ted Pillows warned that leveraged long positions were building near current levels and repeated failures around $2,550 could leave traders exposed to another rejection.

At the same time, spot Ethereum ETFs had taken in $1.85 billion during August, while BitMine and larger wallets were also accumulating ETH.

That broader demand helps explain why one whale's liquidation did not dictate the market's direction. Ethereum gained 32.5% in August, its best month since July 2025, after a slide of nearly 70% between October and June, leaving the latest $408 million exit inside a much larger recovery.
