Grayscale Research warns that artificial intelligence will make transparent blockchains far easier to surveil, and it names Zcash (ZEC), up roughly 19-fold over the past year, as one answer.

Grayscale Report Flags Blockchain Surveillance
The asset manager published the commentary, titled "Zcash and the Privacy Imperative," on Aug. 31, and its head of research, Zach Pandl, put artificial intelligence at the center of the argument. Pandl wrote that machine analysis could tie pseudonymous wallet addresses to exchange records, wallet behavior and information gathered well outside the chain. He framed it as a third wave of privacy concern, after computers digitized financial records in the 1970s and the internet arrived in the 1990s.
Bitcoin (BTC) records every transfer on a ledger anyone can read, a de-anonymization risk flagged in its own white paper. Zcash supports both kinds of transfer, and its shielded option uses zero-knowledge proofs to conceal the sender, the recipient and the amount, while still allowing selective disclosure to auditors or regulators.

Zach Pandl On Zcash Privacy Demand
"For users that prioritize privacy, this could become a 'must have' feature," Pandl said.
He argued that address labeling was possible long before AI, but that the technology could make the practice cheaper, faster and far more widely available to whoever wants it. Grayscale reported earlier that shielded transfers accounted for roughly 90% of Zcash transaction activity as of Jul. 20.
Federal researchers describe a comparable mechanism, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology notes that AI creates fresh re-identification risks while amplifying behavioral tracking and surveillance across data that once sat in separate silos. Privacy assets carry their own friction, since exchanges and banks in several jurisdictions restrict or apply extra scrutiny to coins built around concealment.
Those findings do not examine blockchain records directly, and rising interest in privacy does not by itself guarantee that more people will use shielded transfers.
ZEC Rally And Grayscale's Zcash ETF
Grayscale holds a commercial stake in the outcome.
The firm converted its 2017 Zcash Trust into a spot product that began trading on NYSE Arca under the ticker ZCSH on Aug. 25, six days before the commentary appeared and gave the privacy thesis a listed vehicle.
ZEC has run hard into that listing, gaining close to 80% over the past month.
The token has climbed roughly 19-fold over the past year, a stretch that coincided with growing use of Zcash's shielding technology and fresh capital moving into wallet development and mining. Even so, ZEC was worth less than 1% of Bitcoin's market value as of Aug. 29.
