Apple's $2,000 Foldable Is Reportedly Named Duo, Not iPhone Ultra

Apple will price its first foldable iPhone at about $2,000 and call it iPhone Duo rather than iPhone Ultra, according to a report published hours before Wednesday's keynote.

Key Points:

  • Apple's first foldable phone will reportedly carry the iPhone Duo name, not the iPhone Ultra branding that leaks had repeated since April.
  • Pricing starts at $2,000 for 256 gigabytes and climbs toward $3,000 at the top configuration, with sales opening as early as October.
  • The Sept. 9 presentation is the first led by chief executive John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook on Sept. 1.

iPhone Duo Price Lands Below Forecasts

Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman published the name and the pricing late Tuesday evening, and several technology outlets confirmed the same details within the hour.

The entry model carries 256 gigabytes of storage. Higher capacities push the figure toward $3,000, and the company is absorbing part of a cost overrun that it attributes to a worldwide memory shortage.

The device goes on sale as early as October, several weeks behind the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which reach stores this month in two finishes, white and dark blue. Apple Pencil support is the genuine surprise here.

Camera Code Leak Signals Where The Work Went

Five unreleased camera tools surfaced in iOS 27 beta code this week through a forum analysis, among them exposure scopes, focus peaking, repeated self-timer shots and manual focus locking. The fifth adjusts lens correction by aperture. That detail matters, because the Pro Max is widely expected to ship with a variable aperture main camera that opens and narrows instead of staying fixed at one setting.

None of the five features work in the current developer betas, and the company has left itself ample room to withhold any of them until a later software release. Software, rather than the hinge, appears to carry the year.

Ternus Debut Follows Shifting Price Estimates

The presentation is also the first for chief executive John Ternus, who took the job on Sept. 1 after Tim Cook spent 15 years running the company and moved to executive chairman. Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and ran hardware engineering from 2021, meaning almost everything reaching the stage was developed inside his former division. He inherits a pricing problem rather than a product one.

Gurman reported $100 increases for both Pro models, a milder step than several forecasts had warned about, though the change still sets a record for the line.

Apple has confirmed only the date and the venue, so every figure circulating on Wednesday morning rests on the sourcing of a single reporter.

Estimates have moved repeatedly. Research firm TrendForce put the foldable between $2,099 and $2,299 last week, while earlier reports floated numbers approaching $2,500 for a phone few analysts expect to sell in volume. The iPhone Ultra name, meanwhile, survived in leaks from April through the end of August, even internally at Apple, before Tuesday's report displaced it.
