MetaMask, downloaded more than 100 million times, is becoming a standalone consumer company as Consensys splits in two, while IPO and token questions remain unanswered.
Key Points:
- Consensys Software Inc. will rebrand as MetaMask, while a new Consensys takes over protocols and institutional infrastructure.
- Joe Lubin will lead MetaMask, while Mike Kriak becomes Consensys CEO and David Cunningham serves as president.
- No IPO date or MetaMask token has been confirmed.
MetaMask Split
In a Sep. 9 announcement, Consensys Software Inc. said it will rebrand as MetaMask and focus on consumer products, while its protocols and institutional infrastructure operations move into a newly formed company that keeps the Consensys name. The separation is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
The new Consensys will include Linea and other infrastructure tied to Ethereum (ETH), with Kriak as chief executive, Cunningham as president and Lubin as executive chairman. MetaMask users will not need to change their app, keys or funds.
Lubin said the consumer operation had been gaining value faster than the rest of the business, while MetaMask is now positioning itself as what it calls an “Open Money” platform for holding, spending, saving and trading assets. The wallet has recorded more than 100 million downloads across roughly 190 countries.

Consensys IPO
The restructuring leaves two issues unresolved: whether MetaMask will pursue a public listing and whether it will eventually issue a token. A standalone MetaMask could present a clearer consumer-focused business to public investors than the previous mix of wallet and infrastructure operations.
Lubin did not provide a new listing date. Fortune quoted a company spokesperson saying, “We don’t comment on market speculation or potential future capital markets activity.”
Lubin also said fewer companies now want to issue their own coins under current rules, leaving the long-rumored MetaMask token unconfirmed.
Before the split, Lubin had hinted at a MetaMask token, while Consensys was preparing for an IPO in 2026 before the timetable slipped in May as crypto markets cooled. BeInCrypto reported that Kraken and Grayscale also delayed IPO plans as investor attention shifted toward artificial intelligence listings.
