Cardano (ADA) joined the x402 payment standard on Sept. 21, letting AI agents pay for online services in its native token, which climbed about 4% to a four-month high.
Key Points:
- Apps and AI agents can now pay for web services in ADA through the official x402 toolkit.
- The payment facilitator has settled a transaction only on a test network, and mainnet support is still pending.
- Rival blockchains already process millions of x402 payments, leaving Cardano to play catch-up.
Cardano x402 Integration
Cardano now appears in the official x402 software kit, which lets developers build applications and AI agents that pay for web resources in ADA or in tokens issued on the network.
The Cardano Foundation announced the npm package on Sept. 21, pointing developers to a single install command. Its engineers contributed the client, server and facilitator components after the network's specification merged into the x402 repository around Sept. 9.
Coinbase developed x402 in 2025 with Cloudflare and Stripe, then handed it to a foundation under Linux Foundation stewardship in April, backed by Visa, Mastercard, Google and Amazon Web Services. The standard revives the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" code, which was reserved when the web was designed and then sat unused for decades.
Mainnet support is not live yet. The facilitator has processed a real transaction only on Cardano's pre-production network, so the release does not show agents spending ADA commercially at any scale. TypeScript tools are available now, while Python support is planned for a later release.

ADA Price Break, Payment Rivals
ADA climbed roughly 4% over 24 hours after the announcement, reaching its highest level in four months as traders read the integration as fresh utility rather than another roadmap promise. One chart-focused trader said the token had cleared a multi-year resistance zone, calling the move a possible start of a much larger reversal.
Still, Cardano is arriving late to a crowded field.
The XRP Ledger (XRP) has handled more than 1.4 million AI agent transactions through x402, though raw counts do not show how many separate agents or commercial services sit behind that activity. Coinbase said in September that its developer platform had processed more than 100 million x402 payments across Base and Solana (SOL), and smaller networks such as Casper ran a facilitator on mainnet as far back as June.
x402 Adoption Timeline
The standard spread quickly in its first year, moving from a Coinbase side project to a governed protocol with the largest card networks and cloud providers attached to it. Amazon Bedrock AgentCore added x402 in May, letting agents pay for search, data and backend services in USDC (USDC) without a person clearing each transaction. AI-linked activity on the XRP Ledger passed 1 million payments by July, alongside a Ripple-backed hub that gathered agent tools and developer resources in one place.
