Bitcoin (BTC) broke through $83,000 on Monday and traded near $83,840, clearing a ceiling that had turned back every rally since May.

Key Points:

  • Bitcoin cleared $83,000 on Monday for the first time in months, rising about 4.3% on the day.
  • The move follows its first weekly close above the 50-week moving average in 45 weeks.
  • A dense cluster of short positions sits between $83,000 and $86,000.

Bitcoin Clears $83,000

Bitcoin climbed as high as $83,810 during the session after opening the day near $80,226, a swing of more than 4% in 24 hours. The move lifted its market value to about $1.68 trillion and pushed the wider crypto market up 2.9% to $2.9 trillion, with Bitcoin dominance at 58.1%. Sentiment gauges still read neutral.

The breakout caps a weekend that had already put chart watchers on alert, and it follows Friday's first daily close above $80,000 since Sept. 7. Bitcoin closed last week above its 50-week moving average, a line it had failed to clear on a weekly basis since the week of Nov. 16, 2025.

Alex Thorn Cites History

Alex Thorn, head of firmwide research at Galaxy, flagged that close on X, saying the average has "historically served as strong confirmation that bear market lows are in." In a research note, he counted 13 crossings back above the line across completed bear markets. Only two were followed by a lower low, and both came during the 2021-2022 slide.

He added that this cycle has "so far behaved similarly to the 2015 and 2018 bear markets at the floor." Market watcher Joe Consorti estimated the odds of such a close marking the cycle low at 75%, rising to 100% if the Covid crash is set aside.

Bitcoin $86,000 Target

Monday's break carries the price into territory traders have watched for weeks, after about $433 million flowed into US spot Bitcoin funds on Friday and a squeeze wiped out roughly $603 million of positions in a day. Research desks flag a dense band of short positions between $83,000 and $86,000, meaning forced buying could stretch the move further.

Pivot data places the next resistance between $83,430 and $84,775, with $88,162 as a stretch target if momentum holds.

The floor has moved up with it.

A weekly close back under $78,800 would undo the moving average signal and put $76,000 back in play as the next support. That would be a sharp reversal from here, though the past month has delivered swings of that size in both directions. Bitcoin lost 53.1% from its October 2025 record of $124,824 before bottoming at $58,525 on Jun. 30, and as recently as Sept. 16 a failed Senate vote on crypto market rules pushed it below $75,000.
