Key Points

OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Sol on September 29 for all Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users. The model costs one-fifth of GPT-6 Astra, with cached input priced at $0.10 per million tokens. GPT-6.1 Sol approaches Astra-level performance on coding, computer use, and professional work benchmarks. OpenAI also introduced "Ultrafast," a premium speed tier offering up to 8x faster token generation. A new Pro 500 subscription plan carries the highest usage limits at 25x the Plus tier.

OpenAI on Tuesday launched GPT-6.1 Sol, making the model available immediately to all Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers in ChatGPT Work and Codex. The company describes it as near-Astra performance at a fraction of the cost.

In a series of posts, OpenAI said cached input costs $0.10 per million tokens. That is 95% below standard input pricing and 50% below GPT-6 Sol's cached rate.

What GPT-6.1 Sol Delivers

GPT-6.1 Sol outperforms GPT-6 Sol on coding, computer use, and complex professional tasks. OpenAI said it approaches GPT-6 Astra on several benchmarks at substantially lower cost.

The model also scores better on alignment evaluations than its predecessor. OpenAI said it is more transparent about limitations and more reliable at respecting user intent and safety constraints.

Alongside the model release, OpenAI introduced Ultrafast, a premium speed tier. Ultrafast reaches up to 300 tokens per second in Codex and up to 6x faster output through the API. A new Pro 500 plan unlocks full Ultrafast access and carries 25x the usage limits of a standard Plus subscription.

A Smarter Sol

OpenAI has steadily expanded its model lineup through 2026. The company released GPT-6 Astra earlier this year as its most capable frontier model, while GPT-6 Sol served as a more accessible mid-tier option.

This month, OpenAI scrapped a planned release of GPT-6.1 Astra after its safety team said the model did not meet internal safety standards. GPT-6.1 Sol fills the gap between those two releases, offering significantly improved alignment scores and lower operating costs.

What Comes Next

GPT-6.1 Sol is live today in ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI said Ultrafast access for GPT-6.1 Sol in those platforms is "coming soon." Developers and enterprise teams will watch whether the model's cost profile accelerates adoption at scale.

OpenAI separately announced "dots," a new autonomous agent platform powered by GPT-6 Astra, also on September 29. That product receives separate coverage below.
