Elon Musk's Grok accounted for nearly 60% of AI agent trading volume on Coinbase during one week in September, while OpenAI's ChatGPT took 1.54%, exchange data shows.
Key Points:
- Grok held 59.54% of measured agent trading volume on Coinbase from Sept. 14 to Sept. 21, against 13.37% for Claude and 1.54% for ChatGPT.
- CEO Brian Armstrong called Grok the leading client for agentic traders on Sept. 25.
- Coinbase has not disclosed total agent dollar volume or which coins the agents bought.
Grok Coinbase Volume
The breakdown, which Coinbase's developer account posted on X, split notional trading volume on Coinbase for Agents by the AI client behind each order from Sept. 14 to Sept. 21. Grok led with 59.54%, ahead of custom command-line setups at 21.73% and Anthropic's Claude at 13.37%. Perplexity held 3.48%.
CEO Brian Armstrong responded to the post on Sept. 25, writing that "Grok is the leading client for agentic traders on Coinbase currently." Musk, whose chatbot is built into X, the social network where many crypto traders gather, replied with a single word: "Cool."
The chart covers a single week and counts dollars, not users.

Cathie Wood, Armstrong Views
ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood told a panel at a Robinhood summit in Houston on Sept. 30 that investors may need to watch where AI agents spend money. "We're probably going to be talking more and more about 'follow the agents,'" she said. Armstrong wrote on Sept. 25 that crypto and stablecoins would become the "go-to payment rail" for AI agents.
The ranking measures share, not scale, because Coinbase has not disclosed total agent dollar volume or which coins the agents bought. The closest figure it has given covers x402, the agent payment protocol it built, which processed more than 230 million transactions and $54 million in volume in just over a year.
Coinbase For Agents Rollout
Coinbase says setup takes as few as three clicks. Grok and Perplexity users find the exchange in a plugin or connector tab, while ChatGPT and Claude users connect through the Model Context Protocol. Its documentation states that Claude asks for confirmation in chat before creating an order, while ChatGPT creates it in one turn.
Coinbase for Agents launched on Jun. 11, letting AI assistants trade crypto spot and derivatives from a user's account, and the exchange added U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds on Sept. 22.
Grok's share reportedly climbed from 15.3% to 59.5% across three weekly snapshots after a native integration went live in early September.
