Recenlty McLaren Racing announced a multi-year partnership with Hedera Foundation (HBAR) that makes the distributed ledger network an official sponsor of both its Formula 1 and IndyCar teams.
The agreement centers on free digital collectibles released during F1 Grand Prix weekends, with Arrow McLaren IndyCar collectibles returning for the 2026 season.
Hedera branding will appear on McLaren F1 cars, driver race suits and IndyCar team vehicles.
McLaren framed the collectibles program as accessible to fans without cryptocurrency knowledge.
The team indicated users will not need to hold HBAR tokens or manage blockchain wallets, removing technical barriers that limited adoption in earlier sports blockchain initiatives.
Network Choice and Technical Infrastructure
Hedera operates a distributed ledger using hashgraph consensus rather than traditional blockchain architecture.
The network processes transactions in seconds with predictable low fees, attributes McLaren cited in selecting the platform over alternatives like Ethereum or Solana.
The network's governance structure involves a rotating council of global organizations including Google, IBM, Boeing and Deutsche Telekom. This enterprise-focused model differs from decentralized blockchain networks where governance remains distributed among token holders.
McLaren joins motorsport teams that experimented with digital fan assets over recent seasons. Formula 1 teams previously launched NFT collections during the 2021-2022 cryptocurrency market peak, with several initiatives drawing criticism for high prices and unclear value propositions.

Institutional Positioning and Davos Presence
Hedera sponsored USA House during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos from January 19-23. The network participated in senior-level discussions on digital assets, artificial intelligence, central banking and G20 coordination alongside sponsors including Microsoft, McKinsey and Ripple (XRP).
The Davos sponsorship occurred one week before the McLaren partnership announcement, reflecting institutional positioning efforts by cryptocurrency networks seeking regulatory clarity. Hedera also sponsored Global Blockchain Business Council's parallel Davos programming.
Sports marketing agency SPORTFIVE brokered the McLaren-Hedera deal. Financial terms were not disclosed, though McLaren characterized the partnership as multi-year with expansion potential beyond digital collectibles into areas like ticketing or loyalty programs.
