Microsoft and Nvidia unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra on Wednesday, a $2,599 Windows machine with up to 128GB of memory designed to run AI agents without the cloud.

Key Points:

  • Microsoft and Nvidia launched the Surface Laptop Ultra from $2,599, with shipping set for Oct. 16.
  • Satya Nadella pitched new Windows controls that keep AI agents from acting without permission.
  • An analyst warned that memory costs leave local AI to buyers with big budgets.

Surface Laptop Ultra Pricing

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang joined Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on stage at the San Francisco launch event. Preorders opened the same day, and shipping starts Oct. 16.

The base model pairs an 18-core RTX Spark chip with 24GB of memory, while the top model, with 20 cores, 128GB of memory and 1TB of storage, costs $5,899.

RTX Spark, which Nvidia built with Taiwan's MediaTek, combines an Arm-based processor of up to 20 cores and a Blackwell graphics unit that share one pool of memory. Windows chief Pavan Davuluri said that lets it run AI models other laptops cannot.

Satya Nadella On Agents

Microsoft also introduced Microsoft Execution Containers, a tool that stops AI agents from reaching data or carrying out tasks without permission on laptops and desktops, a risk analysts had flagged before the launch. Anthropic, OpenAI and Nvidia will use it, Davuluri said, and IT departments can set rules that Windows enforces on each employee's machine. "We needed to make the desktop the most secure place for agents to execute," Nadella said.

Huang said the container technology "is going to revolutionize how agents are built and deployed," and that without it, agents are "a complete nonstarter."

Microsoft's Copilot assistant will split work between models on the laptop and the cloud, which it will still use for the hardest tasks, according to Copilot chief Jacob Andreou. For Microsoft, the shift is a bet that some work in its costly Azure data centers can move to PCs where customers pay for the hardware, an opening Apple is also chasing with new Macs.

Anshel Sag On Costs

When Microsoft first pitched running AI on PCs about two years ago, most such laptops cost under $2,000, but a memory-chip shortage has since driven prices higher for desktops and laptops. Nvidia has raised the price of its DGX Spark desktop by about 75%, to $6,950. Anshel Sag, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, said local AI is becoming something only "the people who have the budget can really afford."

Nvidia first showed RTX Spark at Computex in Taipei in June, a push into a PC chip market long dominated by Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, and Intel shares closed more than 4% lower that day. Partner laptops from Dell, HP, Asus, Lenovo and MSI also ship Oct. 16.
