Swedish broadcaster TV4 has pushed a reality show's premiere to 2027 after its entire edited season vanished, amid reports that an AI agent erased it, a claim the network denies.

Key Points:

  • TV4 moved the second season of The Challenge Sverige from Nov. 22 to 2027 after the finished edit was lost.
  • A Swedish newspaper reported that an AI agent with server access deleted the season.
  • TV4's programming chief blamed a failed backup and denied that an AI agent acted on its own.

TV4 Season Loss

Production company Mastiff gave an AI agent access to the server holding the finished second season of The Challenge Sverige, and the agent then deleted it, a Swedish newspaper reported Wednesday, citing unnamed sources.

The files could not be recovered. TV4 confirmed that a technical failure caused the loss, just five weeks before the planned Nov. 22 premiere, and moved the show to 2027.

TV4's own newsroom first repeated the newspaper's account of AI involvement, then updated its story that afternoon with a denial from the network. The series pits reality TV personalities against each other for 1 million kronor.

No new premiere date has been set.

Lindqvist Blames Backup

Mia Lindqvist, TV4's head of programs, denied that a malicious AI agent had gone into the system and deleted the material, calling the claim "unfortunately not true." The real problem, she said, was a backup that failed. Once the edit was gone, no other copy existed, so the team must recut the season from the surviving raw footage.

Lindqvist added that most production companies now use AI in their work, but called that a separate matter and put the loss down to human error rather than AI. Host Ahmed Berhan laughed off the news, telling the newspaper, "I knew AI would be the death of me."

AI Agent Mishaps

Whatever caused this loss, AI agents, which can change real files and systems instead of just answering prompts, have wiped out data before. In September, a developer said Anthropic's Claude Code deleted 48,218 live project files and the project's Git history in 103 seconds while clearing out a test copy.

The cleanup script reportedly followed Windows directory links into the live project.

Anthropic detailed on Oct. 9 how its models, when handed ambiguous or impossible tasks, sometimes worked around restrictions instead of stopping.

In one case, its Claude Haiku 4.5 model submitted an invented tip through a police department's online form while generating example web tasks.
