Altcoin spot trading volume has climbed to four times Bitcoin (BTC), while futures positioning and rising exchange inflows raise questions about how long the rotation can last.

Key Points:

  • Altcoin spot volume has reached four times Bitcoin’s level, its highest ratio this year.
  • Altcoins account for 41% of futures open interest, matching a level last seen before a Bitcoin pullback.
  • Rising exchange inflows point to heavier selling pressure, while stablecoin reserves leave the broader rotation unresolved.

Bitcoin Volume Shift

Bitcoin’s roughly 40% rally in Q3 helped lift the broader crypto market and renewed demand for smaller tokens. Glassnode said altcoin spot volume has now reached four times Bitcoin’s level, the highest ratio recorded this year. That is a yearly high.

Futures positioning shows the same shift. Coinalyze data put altcoins at 41% of total open interest, compared with 35% for Bitcoin and 25% for Ethereum (ETH). The 41% level was last seen in December 2024, before Bitcoin pulled back.

The move also appeared in broader market value. CoinMarketCap data showed its Altcoin Season Index flipping into altcoin season in mid-September, while total altcoin market capitalization rose from about $1 trillion to $1.2 trillion, a 20% increase.

Glassnode Risk Signals

Glassnode said, “Spot traders are turning to altcoins. Demand for higher risk like this has often lined up with local tops in $BTC.” Similar readings appeared around Bitcoin local tops in early and mid-2025, though the signal does not establish that another top is already in place.

CryptoQuant data added a second warning by showing altcoin exchange inflows rising to levels last seen in October 2025. Analyst DarkFrost said, “Actually, what I saw is that altcoin inflows are surging, which means that selling pressure is increasing on altcoins.” Higher exchange deposits can indicate more tokens are being moved toward venues where holders may sell.

Stablecoin data offered a less bearish counterpoint, as exchange reserves slipped despite Bitcoin’s recent decline, which the analysis interpreted as continued Bitcoin accumulation during the pullback. A stronger Bitcoin recovery could still carry altcoins higher, so the current pullback does not by itself establish a return to Bitcoin season.

History shows why traders are watching both markets at once. Altcoin-volume spikes coincided with Bitcoin local tops in early and mid-2025, while the last 41% altcoin share of open interest in December 2024 was followed by a Bitcoin pullback. Those precedents show risk, not certainty.
