Crypto Hack Fears Grow Around Anthropic’s Possible Claude Fable Release

Crypto Hack Fears Grow Around Anthropic’s Possible Claude Fable Release

Crypto markets face fresh hacking fears as Anthropic prepares to release a powerful AI model Fable that could speed up the exploits behind $600 million in recent thefts.

Key Points

  • Anthropic is set to launch Claude Fable, the public version of its Mythos model, as soon as today.
  • Commentators warn the release could trigger short-term FUD and price chop across digital assets.
  • The timing is tense, with crypto hacks topping $600 million since early April.

Claude Fable Launch Rattles Markets

The Information reported that the firm will ship the public version today as Claude Fable, a system the company has warned could threaten global financial infrastructure. The underlying model, codenamed Mythos, has sat behind a restricted program for banks, exchanges and security firms since April. That group, run under a project called Glasswing, included AWS, Microsoft, Apple and CrowdStrike.

Prediction market Polymarket put the odds of a launch today at 84%. The timing is striking, arriving as the startup chases a U.S. public listing that could value it near $1 trillion, just as rival OpenAI files its own.

The Milk Road Flags DeFi Exposure

Market commentator The Milk Road warned that the launch could stir short-term FUD and choppy crypto prices, even if a major hack stays unlikely. The likelier path, the group argued, is that AI-audited code becomes the norm. Serious DeFi teams could then harden their protocols faster than attackers manage to break them, turning the model into a defensive tool as much as an offensive one.

Smart contracts are hard to touch once deployed, the commentator noted, because the biggest protocols audit them to death and freeze the code in place. The real exposure, the team said, sits in front-ends, browser extensions, bridges and the servers holding private keys.

Fable Risk Trails $600M Hack Wave

A single zero-day there could let an attacker slip in malicious code and quietly drain wallets before defenders even notice.

Access to Fable is expected to cost roughly double Anthropic's priciest current models. Analysts say the system can quickly identify flaws in smart contracts, node software and broader infrastructure, sharply shrinking the time attackers need to weaponize a bug.

Anthropic first revealed Mythos in April, calling it a step change in capability and the first model it had ever refused to release to the public. The warning now lands during a brutal stretch for security, with Bitcoin (BTC) sliding and more than $600 million stolen from the sector since early April.
