DEX Volume Sinks 26% In July As On-Chain Liquidity Thins Out

Spot trading volume on decentralized exchanges fell about 26% in July to roughly $130.77 billion, the weakest monthly reading in nearly two years.

Key Points:

  • Spot DEX volume slid to roughly $130.77 billion in July, down 26% from $177.55 billion in June.
  • The reading is the lowest since September 2024 and spans the 35 blockchains currently tracked.
  • Stablecoin supply shrank by $2.23 billion this month even as total crypto market value climbed.

Spot DEX Volume Slides To Two-Year Low

Blockworks' spot DEX dashboard put the July total at $130.77 billion, down from $177.55 billion in June. The figure covers combined inflows and outflows across the 35 blockchains the platform monitors.

It marks the lowest monthly reading since September 2024, extending a slide that showed up across every decentralized trading segment in the second quarter.

Daily turnover stayed thin all month, clearing $6 billion just once, on Jul. 8, when it reached about $6.191 billion. Stablecoin trading accounted for roughly $31.53 billion of the July figure, or close to 30% of all volume moving through decentralized venues.

K33 Research Ties Slump To July Lull

Analysts at K33 Research see a seasonal pattern behind the drop. The firm's latest report called July the weakest stretch of the year for Bitcoin (BTC) trading volumes, a slowdown it described as typical rather than structural.

Its data put average daily spot volume across the market at $2.2 billion over the past 30 days, with open interest on CME futures near multi-year lows and perpetual futures open interest around 300,000 BTC.

Centralized exchanges have thinned out on the same timeline, and spot volume there fell to $3 trillion in the second quarter, an 18.9% quarterly decline. The revenue squeeze has already claimed one venue, because BitMEX now plans to wind down operations entirely by Sept. 23.

Stablecoin supply, which funds most trading pairs on these platforms, contracted by $2.23 billion this month, sliding to about $308.47 billion on DeFiLlama's tracker. Total crypto market value moved the other way and climbed roughly $192 billion, or 11%, after dipping under $2 trillion early in the month. That split matters because dollar tokens set the price of almost everything traded on-chain.

Tokenized Stocks And On-Chain FX Cool

Assets bridging crypto and traditional finance cooled alongside the rest. On-chain foreign exchange turnover reached $646.12 million in July against $721.42 million in June, while tokenized equity volume landed at $1.405 billion, well under June, when the sector surged to a record behind the SpaceX listing.

The slide has been building since last autumn. Monthly spot DEX volume ran near $231 billion in January and had slipped to roughly $206.5 billion by March, the lowest at that point since October 2024. Perpetual DEX volume followed the same path, cooling 23% in the second quarter to $1.83 trillion even as Hyperliquid rebuilt its lead to a 37% share.
