Japanese Police Arrest 18 Participants in Monero Laundering Case

In an unprecedented move within the cryptocurrency realm, Japanese authorities have arrested a group of 18 scammers by scrutinizing Monero transactions.

This significant enforcement action marks the first time Japan's law enforcement agencies have leveraged Monero transactions to unearth criminal activities.

Authorities meticulously analyzed around 900 Monero (XMR)-related money laundering transactions orchestrated by the scam group.

The illegal operations allegedly inflicted approximately 100 million yen ($670,000) in damages. This arrest signifies a pivotal moment in the country’s fight against digital currency-related crime.

According to information provided by Japanese authorities to local media outlet Nikkei, the arrests include the suspected ringleader, Yuta Kobayashi. The group is accused of laundering money using the privacy-focused cryptocurrency Monero and engaging in computer fraud.

This significant breakthrough follows an extensive investigation initiated in August. The probe commenced soon after the establishment of the National Police Agency’s Cyber Special Investigation Unit in April, created to combat the rising tide of cybercrime in Japan.
