Michael Saylor, the co-founder of MicroStrategy, suggests in a Yahoo! Finance interview that the United States should divest its gold reserves in favor of Bitcoin to secure a leading role in the global financial landscape. He asserts Bitcoin as the "world’s reserve capital network" and believes this strategic shift could bolster US financial supremacy.
Saylor emphasizes that Bitcoin surpasses traditional assets like real estate and stocks in long-term value. His firm boasts the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holdings.
He proposes that the US should aim to control about 25% of the Bitcoin network, leveraging this position to depress gold prices by liquidating its precious metal assets. This move, according to Saylor, would compel other nations to invest in Bitcoin, thereby redirecting financial inflows to the US.
He elaborates on the strategy: the US government should purchase a significant stake in the Bitcoin network, spearheading this new global capital network. By selling all its gold reserves to acquire Bitcoin, the US can achieve an advantageous position.
Saylor argues this trade-off would cost the equivalent of the gold but gain immense value by decentralizing gold, which adversary nations hold, thus zeroing their assets. Simultaneously, US assets could soar to $100 trillion, positioning the US at the helm of both the world’s reserve capital and currency networks.
MicroStrategy has significantly bolstered its Bitcoin holdings with a series of substantial acquisitions. Between November 18 and 24, 2024, the company purchased approximately 55,500 bitcoins for $5.4 billion, averaging $97,862 per coin.
This was followed by an additional acquisition of 15,400 BTC for $1.5 billion between November 25 and December 1, at an average price of $95,976 per coin. These purchases have elevated MicroStrategy’s total Bitcoin holdings to 402,100 coins, acquired at a cumulative cost of $23.41 billion, with an average purchase price of $58,219 per BTC.
Saylor continues to advocate for Bitcoin as a strategic asset, urging other corporations, including Microsoft, to adopt similar investment strategies. Despite the inherent volatility in cryptocurrency markets, MicroStrategy’s aggressive accumulation underscores its unwavering confidence in Bitcoin’s long-term value proposition.
