Elon Musk said SpaceX will drop the 3-month-old SpaceXAI name for its artificial intelligence unit and adopt SpaceXSI, following President Donald Trump's Sept. 29 "super intelligence" order.
Key Points:
- Musk confirmed the SpaceXSI name Sunday on X but gave no date.
- Trump's order tells federal agencies to say "super intelligence" instead of "AI."
- SpaceX shares rose about 5% Monday morning as Morgan Stanley repeated a $300 target.
SpaceXSI Rename Details
Musk confirmed the change Sunday on X, his social media platform, after a user asked whether the unit could take the SpaceXSI name. "Yes, we will make that change," he replied. He had written earlier that day that there would be no more AI and that the SI label is better, and later called SpaceX "a super intelligence company."
He gave no timeline. The unit's website and X account still carried the SpaceXAI name when the first reports appeared.
The rename follows an executive order titled "Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence," which argues the new term better reflects what the technology can do. It covers federal public communications, websites and reports, while references written into statutes stay unchanged until Congress passes conforming amendments. Trump first raised the idea at the U.N. General Assembly last month, saying the word "artificial" makes the technology sound fake.

Morgan Stanley Reaction
SpaceX shares rose about 5% to $166.71 in Monday morning trading, the first session after the announcement. That same day, Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas reiterated an Overweight rating and a $300 price target, describing the stock as "cheap and getting cheaper" once expected growth is counted.
Jonas estimated that at a $159 share price investors assign roughly $32 per share to the AI business, and said no hands went up when he asked 40 clients who owned the stock. The new label itself drew doubts. Writer Jesus Diaz argued that the letters "AI" now carry baggage tied to job losses, energy use and low-quality content, which a different name is unlikely to erase.
SpaceXAI Name History
SpaceXSI would be the unit's third name this year. Musk has used the term since 2014, when he cited philosopher Nick Bostrom's book "Superintelligence" while warning about the technology's risks.
Musk founded the business as xAI in 2023. It acquired X in March 2025, before SpaceX took it over this February in a deal valuing the combined company at $1.25 trillion. SpaceX went public in June and introduced the SpaceXAI name in July, a year after the Defense Department awarded the business a contract worth up to $200 million.
