Anthropic has closed a $65 billion Series H financing round at a $965 billion post-money valuation, the company announced on Friday.
The round was led by Altimeter Capital and pushes Anthropic past OpenAI as the most valuable private AI company in the world.
The Round Details
The $65 billion raise is one of the largest private funding rounds in technology history. Post-money valuation stands at $965 billion, just below the $1 trillion threshold. According to reports, the round may be Anthropic's final private fundraise before an IPO.
Altimeter led the round. Additional investor names had not been fully disclosed at publication time.

Overtaking OpenAI
The raise marks a clear shift in the private AI market's pecking order. OpenAI had long held the top spot among private AI companies by valuation. Anthropic's new post-money figure now exceeds OpenAI's last disclosed valuation.
Reportedly, the round is among the largest ever closed by a private startup in any sector.
Background
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers, including Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei. The company was built on a safety-focused research mandate. Prior funding rounds had already established Anthropic among the most capitalized AI labs globally.
A Yellow report published earlier this month covered Anthropic's cofounder discussing AI safety concerns at the Vatican, showing how the company has positioned ethics at the center of its public narrative.

Claude Model Release Runs Concurrently
Separately, Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.8 on the same day.
The new model ships at the same price as its predecessor but includes a fast mode priced approximately three times cheaper. The model sits below Anthropic's unreleased Claude Mythos in capability rankings, per the company's own disclosures. The simultaneous model drop and funding announcement reinforces Anthropic's current pace of both commercial and research output.
