Arbitrum Brings Layer-2 Capabilities to Metaverse via Lotte's Caliverse

In a landmark partnership, Ethereum Layer-2 network Arbitrum has joined forces with South Korea's Lotte Group to expand its metaverse initiatives. This collaboration, unveiled at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, underscores Arbitrum's commitment to fostering innovation through its largest-ever developer grant, directed at enhancing Lotte's Caliverse gaming platform.

Caliverse, designed as an AI-powered 3D entertainment hub, will now leverage blockchain technology to deliver immersive experiences.

This development was announced by Offchain Labs, the developers behind Arbitrum, though specific financial details remain undisclosed. Notably, the grant has been issued in Arbitrum's native token, ARB, aligning with the Foundation's strategy to spur ecosystem growth.

John Park, Head of Korea at the Arbitrum Foundation, remarked, "Lotte is our largest grant recipient to date. We’re proud to collaborate with partners closely aligned with our vision." Lotte initially ventured into the metaverse in 2022, and this enhanced partnership marks a significant advance in integrating blockchain with traditional business ventures.

Caliverse's platform is a testbed for cutting-edge tech trends like artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and cryptocurrency. Users can explore virtual worlds, enjoy futuristic shopping, and engage with branded content from global icons such as 7-Eleven and Tomorrowland. With Arbitrum's blockchain underpinnings, users will soon be able to execute crypto payments efficiently, with seamless on-chain in-game transactions.

The collaboration could rejuvenate corporate interest in the metaverse, a concept that saw its peak years ago but subsequently struggled for traction.

Steven Goldfeder, CEO of Offchain Labs, commented, "Arbitrum offers the ideal environment for Lotte Caliverse, delivering swift block times that ensure high-quality virtual experiences. In-game transactions will integrate flawlessly on-chain, minimizing latency for a smooth user experience."

While Lotte's grant represents a significant milestone, it aligns with Arbitrum Foundation’s history of backing pioneering projects. Earlier on January 11, 2024, a grant was awarded to AOFverse, aiming to elevate on-chain metaverse experiences. Such initiatives underscore Arbitrum's broader objective to lead in blockchain-powered virtual environments.

The flexibility of Arbitrum's Layer-2 solution has made it a favorite within the gaming sector, evidenced by its impressive 72% growth in 2024.

Offchain Labs reports that the network hosts 119 game titles and 23 gaming-centric blockchains through its Arbitrum Orbit stack, supporting customized blockchain development.

This collaboration melds Lotte's entertainment and retail prowess with blockchain's efficiency, heralding a new era of virtual engagement. For Arbitrum, the partnership solidifies its stature as the go-to blockchain for gaming and metaverse platforms, promising a fresh phase of brand interaction within metaverse realms.

Despite the groundbreaking announcement, ARB's token price has faced volatility, registering nearly a 10% drop since trading began on Wednesday. ARB is trading at $0.827, reflecting the market's complex dynamics post-announcement.
