ChatGPT Deactivates Teen Accounts For Violent Threats — Then Tells Parents Why

OpenAI will alert linked parents when a teen loses ChatGPT access for violating rules on violent threats or acts, expanding its family safety controls.

Key Points:

  • Linked parents will receive an alert after a teen account is deactivated for serious violence-related violations.
  • The notice provides more context without revealing the teenager’s private conversations.
  • Parents can also enable Study Mode, while teen users will see more frequent break reminders.

OpenAI Parent Alerts

OpenAI announced the change on Jul. 16, saying the notification will apply when its systems deactivate a linked teen account under policies covering violent threats or acts of violence online. The parent or guardian will first see an “important update” about the account.

The alert can then open a longer explanation stating that the account was disabled for violating the company’s violence rules. It will not include the teen’s chat history or disclose specific private exchanges.

OpenAI introduced parental controls in 2025, allowing adults to link their accounts with those of their teenage children. Parents can set quiet hours and limit sensitive material. They also receive alerts when ChatGPT detects possible signs of self-harm.

The latest update also lets parents activate Study Mode from the control panel, making guided questions and step-by-step assistance the default in new chats. Teenagers who remain in ChatGPT for extended periods will receive more frequent reminders to take a break.

OpenAI developed the violence notification with Moonshot, an organization that monitors and counters online violence.

ChatGPT Safety Context

Vidhya Ramalingam, Moonshot’s founder and CEO, said parental notification gives families an opportunity to intervene before a serious concern escalates. “Notifying a parent when a serious concern arises, with a route to more context, is a critical first step,” she said.

The feature matters because account enforcement alone may remove access without bringing responsible adults into the situation. OpenAI said the approach seeks to support offline conversations while preserving the privacy of teen users.

The expansion follows scrutiny over the Feb. 10, 2026, mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. OpenAI had banned the suspect’s account in June 2025 for violent-activity violations but did not alert law enforcement, and Sam Altman apologized publicly on Apr. 24.

The parent alert does not resolve when authorities should be contacted, but it adds a direct warning channel that did not exist when that account was closed.
