Ethereum Co-Founder Criticizes Crypto Regulation as 'Anarcho-Tyranny'

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has voiced strong criticism of current cryptocurrency regulations. This is not the first time, but now he has found some pretty sounding arguments. He claims that regulations have created an 'anarcho-tyranny' situation.

The Ethereum co-founder identifies a key regulatory challenge. He claims that projects offering vague promises of returns face little scrutiny. Meanwhile, those providing clear explanations of potential returns and customer rights face intense regulatory pressure.

"If you do something useless, or something where you're asking people to give you money in exchange for vague references to potential returns at best, you are free and clear," Buterin stated. He contrasted this with the stricter treatment of more transparent projects.

Buterin argues this creates perverse incentives. He believes the current regulatory environment is "worse for the space than either plain anarchy or plain tyranny."

The cryptocurrency space is rife with bad actors and scammers. These proliferate on social media and sharing platforms. Buterin has previously suggested three recommendations to address this issue of "useless" cryptocurrency products and services.

The U.S. market presents a particular challenge. It has a large number of cryptocurrency users. However, its regulatory approach is often described as nebulous or uneven.

Buterin advocates for a shift in regulatory focus. He wants to see greater scrutiny of projects without clear long-term value propositions. "I would much rather see us move to the opposite situation, where issuing a token without giving a clear long-term story for why it will maintain or increase in economic value is the riskier thing," he said.

However, Buterin acknowledges that regulation is only part of the solution. He is pretty sure there is a need for cooperation between regulators and industry players, whether you like it or not. And most of the hard core crypto fan don't.

"Actually getting to this will require good-faith engagement, both from regulators and from industry," Buterin noted. This highlights the complex nature of the challenge facing the cryptocurrency sector.

Buterin's comments underscore the ongoing debate about appropriate regulation in the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency space. They reflect growing concerns about the balance between innovation and consumer protection.

Bitcoin Could Reach $500,000 Within 4 Years, Says Appolo's CEO
Jul 02, 2024
Thomas Fahrer, CEO of crypto review platform Apollo, suggests multiple factors could drive Bitcoin price to $500,000 in the next few years. This would require a full-scale bull run and would represent an eightfold increase from current levels. Fahrer believes several "low probability" events could trigger a strong bull market. Even if only a few materialize, Bitcoin could reach $300,000 to $500,000 in the next four-year cycle, meaning 10x profits for most of the current BTC holders. According to Fahrer, one potential catalyst is Bitcoin surpassing gold's market capitalization. "Bitcoin's $1.2 trillion market cap compared to gold's $15 trillion is achievable within years," Fahrer states. He also notes U.S. presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr.'s proposal to back the dollar with Bitcoin. While Fahrer doesn't expect Kennedy to win, he sees value in the public discussion about these kinds of non-trivial decisions. "If that happened, it would send Bitcoin astronomically higher," Fahrer explains the possible outcome of Kennedy's idea. Fahrer's X following has grown steadily since late 2022. It accelerated with the launch of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024. His regular updates on ETF flows have attracted attention. Fahrer now has approximately 60,000 X followers. "There's been a lot of interest in ETFs," he says. "It's the big story of this cycle and potentially for crypto beyond Bitcoin." Despite his optimism, Fahrer doesn't ignore market downturns. He was one of those who noticed recent significant sell-offs, including those from Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, and carried out an analysis of those events. For Bitcoin content, Fahrer has preferred sources. He follows Vivek Sen for memes, Hodl Capital for ETF flows, and Glassnode's James Check for technical analysis.
Crypto Whales Silently Invest in Obscure New Meme Coin
Jul 02, 2024
A new competitor to Pepe Coin (PEPE) is attracting attention from crypto whales. The token, Pepe Unchained (PEPU), is gaining traction in web3 trading circles. But make no mistake, it's not just another meme coin. PEPU is a new Ethereum layer-2 blockchain. So it's a meme coin on a solid base, to say the least. PEPU is currently in presale. Several prominent crypto analysts have invested. Clinix Crypto, with over 60,000 YouTube subscribers, has bought in. Crypto Gains advised his 130,000 subscribers to consider an early investment. Jacob Crypto Bury sees potential for a 10x return. The presale has raised over $1.77 million to date. At the current token price of $0.0081939, PEPU's market cap stands at $64 million. This valuation could increase if the project succeeds as both a meme coin and an Ethereum layer-2 solution. Investors should note that the token price will rise once the presale reaches $1.96 million. To participate, users can connect their MetaMask wallet on the official website. The presale accepts ETH, BNB, and USDT. Pepe Unchained aims to appeal to both the Pepe meme coin community and DeFi enthusiasts. Thirty percent of the token supply is allocated for staking rewards. Presale investors can start earning these rewards immediately. The project's website currently displays a staking yield of around 1,100%. At this rate, early investors could potentially double their initial investment in about one month. However, this yield is expected to decrease as more PEPU is staked. This high yield offers early investors a chance to increase their holdings. This potential growth is independent of any price appreciation post-launch. The token price increase and high staking yields present significant opportunities. However, investors should conduct thorough research before participating. Crypto investments carry inherent risks. As the crypto market evolves, projects like PEPU demonstrate the ongoing innovation in the space. The combination of meme coin appeal and layer-2 functionality could set a new trend in the industry. Now might be the best time to jump on that wagon, of course if you on of those people, who are up to risky projects in their early stages.
Circle Secures EU Stablecoin Approval: Does USDC Have a Chance to Outrun USDT?
Jul 02, 2024
Circle has obtained registration as an electronic money institution in France. This grants the firm a crucial license to issue stablecoins under the European Union's new stringent crypto regulations. And thus Circle's USDC might finally get an edge over Tether's USDT. The approval comes from France's banking regulator, ACPR. Circle is now the first global stablecoin issuer to comply with the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, which many crypto fans have already dubbed 'demonic', 'unhealthy' and even 'orwellian'. The license enables Circle to issue its USDC and EURC tokens in the EU. These will now comply with MiCA's stablecoin rules. Circle is also launching its Circle Mint service in France. Jeremy Allaire, Circle's CEO, called the approval "a huge milestone". He emphasized the company's commitment to regulatory compliance since its founding and now this long-term investment has paid off. Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies pegged to traditional assets. They offer stability in the volatile crypto market. Traders use them to move quickly between cryptocurrencies. The EU passed MiCA last year. It's the world's first comprehensive crypto law. Also deemed as one of the harshest ones. MiCA outlines investor protection rules and safeguards against market manipulation. Stablecoin provisions under MiCA were approved last week. These rules are particularly strict. They limit trading volumes for certain stablecoins, especially those denominated in US dollars. Circle's French registration allows it to offer services throughout the EU. This includes minting and redeeming USDC via Circle Mint. MiCA permits crypto businesses to "passport" their services across the bloc. The remaining MiCA obligations will apply from December 30, 2024, but crypto companies will have until July 2026 to achieve full compliance. Two years isn't a very long period for the world of finance, to say the least. USDC is the second-largest stablecoin globally. It has $32.4 billion in circulation. Tether's USDT remains the largest, with $112.7 billion in circulation. Yet, Tether hasn't done crucial steps to comply with MiCA demands, and we will have to wait and see how it ends for the leading stablecoin. As well as for its competitors.
USDT Minting on Ethereum and Tron Plummets 85% in Six Months: Bearish Sign?
Jul 02, 2024
The minting of USDT, the world's largest stablecoin by market capitalization, has dramatically declined on Ethereum and Tron networks. Over the past six months, issuance has fallen from $7 billion to just $1 billion. Sound like a catastrophy, yet it isn't. This sharp decrease coincides with a broader market contraction in June. It indicates reduced trading activity and waning demand for cryptocurrencies during this period. The question is, however, how serious this might be in a long-term perspective. An analyst on X highlighted this trend. And came up with a possible explanation, saying that the decline in minting activity reflects diminished blockchain utilization on both networks. Tron remains a preferred network for USDT minting despite Ethereum's dominance. It offers superior scalability and lower transaction costs. Ethereum has made strides in scaling. The emergence of layer-2 platforms like Base and Arbitrum has bolstered its ecosystem. Recent upgrades, such as Dencun, aim to reduce transaction costs on these layer-2 solutions. The drop in USDT minting suggests a broader decline in crypto demand. Historically, large-scale USDT minting has correlated with rising Bitcoin and crypto prices. Until minting activity resumes on these leading smart contract platforms, Bitcoin and major altcoin prices may remain suppressed. Tether, USDT's issuer, recently partnered with Uquid. The collaboration aims to modernize payments for the Philippines' Social Security System using the TON blockchain. Simultaneously, Tether announced the cessation of USDT minting on Algorand and EOS networks. Redemptions will continue for another year. USDT can still be minted on over ten platforms. The total USDT minted to date exceeds whopping $110 billion. Who says cryptocurrency isn't conquering the world right now?
Bitcoin Poised for Potential July Rebound, Analysts Say
Jul 02, 2024
Bitcoin may see a strong rebound in July following a weak performance in June. The cryptocurrency fell almost 7% last month. This trend aligns with historical data from Coinglass. Bitcoin has averaged a 0.35% decline in June since 2013. However, July has typically been a strong month. BTC has posted minimum monthly gains of 8% in seven of the last eleven July periods. Crypto analyst Ali Martinez noted a pattern on social media. When June ends in a downtrend, Bitcoin often gains an average of 7.42% in July. Memecoin analyst Murad corroborated this observation. Murad pointed out that Bitcoin has seen minimum gains of 28% in early July for six consecutive years. This data suggests a potential for significant upward movement. However, some analysts predict a tougher July than usual. They cite two main factors. First, sizeable Bitcoin sales from the German government. Second, the upcoming Mt. Gox repayments. The Mt. Gox repayments are expected to return $8.5 billion in BTC to creditors. This process begins in early July. Some fear this could put pressure on Bitcoin's price. Yet, not all analysts view the Mt. Gox situation as dire. Only $4 billion of the total amount may hit the spot BTC market. This could limit the potential negative impact. Jonathan de Wet of ZeroCap shared his perspective with Cointelegraph. He expects Bitcoin to hold around its current level. However, he noted it could fall to a "key support" level of $57,000 as repayments begin. Historically, November has been Bitcoin's strongest month. It has posted an average monthly gain of 46.81% since 2013.
Metaplanet Expands Bitcoin Holdings with 20 BTC Purchase, Following Michael Saylor's Playbook
Jul 02, 2024
Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has acquired 20.2 Bitcoin. This latest purchase brings its total holdings to 161.3 BTC. Michael Saylor isn't going to be jealous, just yet. But it's only a beginning of the long path to compete with him. The Tokyo-based company invested 200 million yen ($1.2 million) in this acquisition. Metaplanet announced the purchase on social media after the Tokyo Stock Exchange closed. Last week, Metaplanet revealed plans to invest $6 million in Bitcoin. The funds for this purchase will come from a recent bond sale. The company, dubbed "Asia's MicroStrategy," will record its long-term Bitcoin holdings at acquisition cost. These are exempt from quarterly market value assessments for tax purposes. Other Bitcoin holdings will be evaluated at market prices each quarter. Gains or losses will be recorded under non-operating income or expenses. Metaplanet decided to incorporate Bitcoin into its treasury assets in April. The move aims to reduce exposure to the Japanese yen, affected by low interest rates. Simply put, Bitcoin seems more stable for long-term investments, that yen. The company sees Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation and a tool for macroeconomic resilience. Metaplanet's strategy mirrors that of MicroStrategy, a Virginia-based software developer. MicroStrategy, run by Michael Saylor, has been buying Bitcoin for nearly four years. It now holds over 226,000 BTC, more than 1% of Bitcoin's total supply. That makes Saylor a constant and unyielding Bitcoin bull. This approach is not unique to Metaplanet and MicroStrategy. More companies are likely to follow suit. Corporate treasurers are exploring Bitcoin as a reserve asset due to economic uncertainties. The most popular way to obtain some Bitcoin is, of course, buying ETFs. Thus you don't need to hold actual crypto, secure the keys, whatsoever. But some companies do like it Saylor's way. Abra, a digital asset platform, reports increasing interest from non-crypto businesses in using Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset. Marissa Kim, Head of Asset Management at Abra Capital Management, notes particular interest from real estate companies and SMBs. The trend reflects growing concerns about inflation and geopolitical tensions. It suggests a shift in corporate treasury management strategies. More companies may adopt Bitcoin as a hedge against economic instability.
Paraguayan Bitcoin Miners Warn of Industry Collapse Due to New Energy Tariffs
Jul 02, 2024
A newly formed association of Paraguayan cryptocurrency miners has issued a stark warning about the future of their industry. The group claims that recent energy tariff increases could lead to the sector's demise. Or simply put, Bitcoin mining in this lovely country will be over. Probably forever. The National Electricity Administration has raised electricity costs for miners by 13% to 16%. This move has sparked concern among industry participants. The Paraguayan Chamber of Digital Asset Mining stated that the price hikes will significantly impact the bitcoin mining industry. They warned that this could potentially lead to the sector's disappearance in Paraguay. The chamber expressed concern about potential revenue losses for the country. They also highlighted risks of job losses and diminished government trust. Miners argue that they face disproportionately high energy costs. "Energy is being sold to [crypto miners] at much higher prices – even up to 50% higher – than for other industries in Paraguay," they said. The mining body, comprising 12 major players, formed in June to advocate for pro-business regulation. They claim that Bitcoin mining currently generates $1.5 billion annually for the Paraguayan economy. The National Electricity Administration (ANDE) has classified some 50 mining firms as part of an "especially intensive consumption sector". The heaviest consumers in this group face monthly price increases of 16%. Tariffs for these firms have risen from USD/KW 55.88 to USD/KW 65.04. ANDE has also been cracking down on illegal crypto mining operations. The mining association argues that the government's approach contradicts its generally pro-business stance. They warn that these actions could negatively impact Paraguay's investment environment. "This situation will only project a negative image of the investment environment in Paraguay," the body stated. They added that it will significantly undermine the legal security necessary for investment, both domestic and overseas.
Vitalik Buterin Advocates for Reduced Staking Requirements to Maintain Ethereum's Decentralization
Jul 01, 2024
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has addressed concerns about the network's potential shift towards centralization. His comments come in response to recent criticisms from Doug Colkitt, founder of Ambient Finance. Buterin comes up to protect the network he helped to create, but he also brings some very fresh, even unexpected, narrative to the table. Buterin emphasized the need to reduce the current 32 ETH staking requirement. This amount currently equates to approximately $111,000. "Every poll I make confirms the same thing: the #1 thing in becoming more home staking friendly is to reduce the 32 ETH requirement," Buterin stated. The Ethereum co-founder's stance is based on consistent community feedback. It highlights the importance of lowering financial barriers to make staking more accessible, simply because people think the levels to enter ETH staking are way too high for an average user. Colkitt, however, argues against relying on data centers for Ethereum. He believes protocols unable to run on consumer hardware risk losing censorship resistance. Colkitt calls for a rigorous engineering approach to home staking. "If Ethereum wants to be a home staking network, it has to be as rigorously engineering-driven as high throughput chains like Solana," Colkitt asserted. He advocates for strict service level agreements for typical home stakers. Buterin pointed to solutions like Orbit and Solo Staking Friendly (SSF) validator set management. These innovations aim to simplify the staking process for smaller participants. The Ethereum co-founder also expressed optimism about "hyper-aggregation". This concept involves aggregating up to 1 million signatures within a 12-second slot. It's designed to be quantum-resistant. However, Buterin acknowledged that fully developing this technology will take time. It requires careful consideration of associated risks.
