Key Points
OpenAI overhauled ChatGPT's voice architecture to allow continuous audio flow without interruptions. The new system, GPT-Live, lets ChatGPT listen while it speaks. Voice session startup dropped from six network round trips to one. Audio moves through a dedicated fast path while reasoning and tool use run asynchronously. OpenAI published a full technical walkthrough of the rebuild.
OpenAI has rebuilt the voice infrastructure powering ChatGPT, releasing a new architecture called GPT-Live that keeps audio flowing continuously so deeper reasoning and tool use do not interrupt a conversation.
OpenAI described the changes in a series of posts on August 3 and published a blog explaining how the system was rebuilt from client to model. The company said voice session startup was reduced from six network round trips to one.
How GPT-Live Works
GPT-Live routes audio through a dedicated fast path separate from reasoning and tool calls. Those deeper processes run asynchronously, meaning they complete in the background without pausing the audio stream.
The result is a voice session that starts faster and stays active without the gaps users previously experienced when ChatGPT processed complex requests.
OpenAI said in a post that the architecture handles the moment a session starts, making conversation feel more natural from the first exchange. The rebuild addresses a structural limitation of the prior stack, where any reasoning step forced the audio layer to wait.

GPT-Live Rebuild Targets ChatGPT Voice Delays
OpenAI has moved aggressively on voice capabilities through 2026. Earlier this year the company faced criticism that ChatGPT voice responses felt stilted and slow when handling multi-step queries. The GPT-Live rebuild represents OpenAI's direct engineering response to that gap.
The release follows OpenAI's disclosure last month that an internal version of its next major model produced ten new mathematics results for roughly $2,000 in token costs, signaling broad infrastructure investment across the product line.
