Kalshi Sports Contracts Blocked In Michigan
First pitch at Comerica Park is set for 6:40 p.m. ET. The game opens the second night of a four-game series between two clubs sitting fourth and fifth in the American League Central. Kansas City had swept the San Francisco Giants before arriving in Detroit.
Detroit took Thursday's opener 4-3 behind a three-run homer from James Outman in the seventh and a tiebreaking double by Dillon Dingler an inning later. Kansas City starter Randy Dobnak threw five scoreless innings before the bullpen surrendered the lead. The win moved the Tigers to 49-54 and left the Royals at 43-61.
Fans inside Michigan cannot trade the rematch on Kalshi.
Ingham County Circuit Judge Rosemarie Aquilina ordered the exchange on Jun. 29 to stop offering sports wagers to state residents, and Kalshi began geoblocking users days later with an in-app notice.
Attorney General Dana Nessel had sued in March, arguing the contracts amounted to unlicensed sports betting under state gaming law.

Polymarket Pricing Splits Along State Lines
Traders outside Michigan have had no such trouble, and Polymarket carried the opener with Detroit near 60 cents a share, implying roughly a 60 percent chance of a home win. A Stats Insider model that simulated that game 10,000 times landed at 63 percent for the Tigers.
Polymarket sought its own order blocking state enforcement and lost, so both exchanges now sit dark in Michigan.
Kalshi says it answers only to federal regulators and will keep fighting, while facing $120,000 for each day of noncompliance. The stakes are real, because Detroit has won 14 of 19 games and may now keep Tarik Skubal rather than trade the two-time Cy Young Award winner before the Aug. 3 deadline.
Prediction Market Volume Outgrows Sportsbooks
Prediction platforms traded about $24 billion worldwide in April, more than the roughly $14 billion wagered each month at legal U.S. sportsbooks during 2025. Analysts at the Pew Research Center assembled that comparison. Michigan is one of a handful of states, alongside Nevada and Minnesota, where sports contracts have stopped or will soon stop.
Michigan's case has moved quickly since spring. Nessel filed in Ingham County in March, a federal judge returned the suit to state court in June, and Aquilina signed her order days after that.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission then intervened on Jul. 14, telling Kalshi to settle pending Michigan trades the exchange had proposed to cancel.
