Tether Buys 8,888 Bitcoin Worth $779M In Q4 2025 Following Quarterly Reserve Strategy

Tether (USDT) purchased 8,888 Bitcoin (BTC) worth approximately $779 million during the fourth quarter of 2025.

The stablecoin issuer maintains its strategy of allocating 15% of quarterly profits to Bitcoin reserves.

The transaction was reported by cryptocurrency analytics platform Watcher.Guru on December 31, 2025.

Tether has consistently purchased exactly 8,888 BTC at the end of each quarter throughout 2025.

What Happened

The USDT issuer executed its quarterly Bitcoin purchase following the same pattern established in Q1 and Q3 2025.

On-chain data shows Tether transferred the Bitcoin from Bitfinex exchange to its reserve wallet address.

The specific number 8,888 carries cultural significance in Asian markets as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune.

Tether began accumulating Bitcoin in September 2022 as part of its reserve diversification strategy.

The company officially announced in May 2023 it would allocate up to 15% of net profits each quarter toward Bitcoin purchases.

Previous 2025 acquisitions included 8,888 BTC for $735 million in Q1 and approximately 8,889 BTC for $1 billion in Q3.

Bitcoin's price ranged between approximately $83,000 and $88,000 during the Q4 purchase period.

The company now ranks among the largest corporate Bitcoin holders globally.

Why It Matters

Tether's systematic Bitcoin accumulation demonstrates institutional confidence in cryptocurrency as a treasury reserve asset.

The stablecoin issuer reported $13 billion in net profit for 2024, largely driven by interest income from U.S. Treasury holdings.

USDT remains the world's largest stablecoin with supply exceeding $144 billion, representing approximately 61% of the total stablecoin market.

The company holds over $97.6 billion in U.S. Treasury securities, placing it among the top 20 largest holders globally.

Tether's reserve strategy includes diversification across Bitcoin, gold reserves worth $5-6 billion, and traditional financial instruments.

The quarterly Bitcoin purchases occur at period-end and are settled before attestation reports.

The consistent accumulation pattern provides predictable institutional demand for Bitcoin regardless of short-term price volatility.

Tether's approach differs from most stablecoin issuers who focus primarily on short-term securities and fiat reserves.
