Apple released iOS 26.7 with fixes for nearly 80 security vulnerabilities, giving iPhone users a security-focused alternative to upgrading immediately to iOS 27.

Key Points:

  • iOS 26.7 addresses nearly 80 vulnerabilities, including 16 Kernel flaws and a root-privilege issue that could give a malicious app elevated control.
  • A WebKit use-after-free bug can trigger memory corruption when maliciously crafted web content is processed on a vulnerable device.
  • The update supports iPhone 11 and later, while iOS 27 remains a separate option.

Apple iOS Patches

Apple released iOS 26.7 on Sept. 14 alongside its annual iOS 27 rollout, less than a month after iOS 26.6.1, preserving a patched path for users who are not ready for the major upgrade. The company’s security advisory lists fixes across core iPhone components, including 16 Kernel vulnerabilities, five ImageIO flaws and a WebKit issue.

Among the Kernel vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-43689 stands out because a malicious app could gain root privileges, potentially giving it broad control over the device. Apple said it addressed the permissions issue with additional restrictions.

The release also fixes five ImageIO flaws involving maliciously crafted images or files, with possible effects including memory corruption and unexpected app termination. WebKit flaw CVE-2026-43715, a use-after-free bug, could cause memory corruption when a user processes maliciously crafted web content.

iPhone Update Choice

iOS 26.7 supports iPhone 11 and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch third generation and later, and iPad Pro 11-inch first generation and later. It also covers iPad Air third generation and later, iPad eighth generation and later, and iPad mini fifth generation and later. Users with compatible hardware can instead move to iOS 27.

Security experts generally recommend automatic updates, but Apple distributes them in stages, which can leave some devices waiting for days or longer.

Users who want the fixes immediately can open Settings, General, Software Update and install iOS 26.7 manually, or choose iOS 27 if their device supports it.

Apple has historically kept the previous iOS branch updated for a limited period after a new annual release, reducing pressure to adopt the newest platform on day one. In this case, iOS 26.7 follows iOS 26.6.1 by less than a month, extending security coverage as iOS 27 begins its rollout.
