AI Image Giant Midjourney Surges Into Consumer Apps With Co-Star Deal

Midjourney acquired astrology app Co-Star in its first major move into Consumer Apps, marking the AI image lab's entry into consumer software on July 24.

Co-Star's founder has joined Midjourney's team to help build what the company describes as its first lineup of apps.

The deal signals a sharp strategic turn for a lab that built its reputation entirely on AI image and video generation.

Midjourney Acquisition Targets Everyday Users Through Consumer Apps

Midjourney has operated almost entirely through Discord since its 2022 launch, with no standalone app and no consumer product of its own. The Co-Star acquisition changes that, as the company said.

Co-Star, launched in 2019 by Banu Guler, became one of the most downloaded astrology apps in the US, peaking at tens of millions of users and raising roughly $15 million from investors including Index Ventures.

What made Co-Star unusual was its AI-first architecture from the start. It used natural language processing to generate personalized horoscopes based on NASA astronomical data and detailed birth-chart calculations.

Unlike generic astrology apps, it produced text that felt personal and specific. That experience, built around a conversational AI layer, is precisely the type of interface Midjourney now wants to replicate across a broader Consumer Apps portfolio.

Guler joining Midjourney as a full-time team member, rather than simply taking a payout, suggests the deal is structured around her continued role in product development.

That kind of founder retention is rare in acqui-hires and points to Midjourney treating this as a foundation for a new Consumer Apps organization rather than a one-off purchase.

From Image API To Full Consumer Apps Company

Midjourney's business has until now been almost entirely subscription-based access to its image and video models. The company has no advertising revenue, no consumer app store presence, and limited direct relationships with casual users.

Its subscriber base skews toward designers, marketers, and creative professionals.

The Co-Star deal represents a direct bet that Consumer Apps are the next major growth surface. The category logic is clear: people who already use AI chatbots, AI search, and AI-generated content are increasingly comfortable with AI-first apps designed around personality, self-expression, and daily habit formation.

Astrology apps sit at the intersection of all three.

Midjourney is not the only AI lab making this pivot. Cognition, the AI coding startup, acquired Poke, a text-message-style AI assistant, in a deal reported to value Poke in the low nine figures. The acquisitions arrive at the same moment, and both point to the same thesis: the next wave of AI value creation lies in Consumer Apps and user retention, not raw model performance.

Co-Star Built The Playbook Midjourney Now Wants To Copy

Co-Star's trajectory is worth understanding in detail, because it is the template Midjourney appears to be buying.

The app grew without paid acquisition by leaning hard on social sharing. Its notification copy, often blunt and slightly unsettling ("Be more honest about what you don't know," or "Today: don't"), became a cultural touchpoint.

Users screenshotted and shared them. The app spread through social proof.

That virality was not accidental.

Guler and her team designed for shareability from the start, understanding that a personalized AI output with a small dose of personality is more likely to circulate than a generic one. It is a lesson many AI labs, focused on benchmarks and API contracts, have not yet absorbed.

Midjourney's image generation already has viral properties.

Users routinely share outputs on social media. What the company has lacked is the daily-use hook that keeps people returning without a specific creative project in mind.

An AI-native Consumer Apps strategy, built on the Co-Star model of short, personal, shareable outputs, solves that problem.

What Comes After The Midjourney Acquisition

The Midjourney acquisition lands at a moment when the broader AI consumer app market is accelerating. OpenAI has added voice mode to ChatGPT's desktop app, expanded into health records integration, and rolled out ChatGPT Health for eligible US users. Every major AI lab is trying to shift from utility tool to daily habit.

Midjourney's entry point is differentiated.

Rather than competing directly with ChatGPT on general-purpose assistance, it appears to be targeting emotionally resonant, identity-adjacent experiences. Astrology is one example.

The category more broadly includes wellness, personality, relationships, and self-reflection, areas where users return daily and share outputs freely.

The Co-Star brand and user base give Midjourney an immediate foothold in that category. Guler's experience building a viral Consumer Apps product from scratch gives the company something harder to acquire: institutional knowledge of what makes people open an app every morning.
