He sees genuine weakness in early graduate hiring across a handful of unnamed industries, but insists the hard evidence stops there for the moment. Anything past that point, in his telling, remains guesswork.
Timing is the trap, he argued, because the current AI surge began alongside a pandemic that warped hiring, remote work, and pay across whole sectors at the very same moment. Pulling one clean signal out of that tangle, separating real automation from pandemic noise, he conceded, has proven nearly impossible.

Anthropic Hiring Skews Senior
Inside the company, the change already shows. Anthropic now recruits more senior researchers than it once did, because its own model runs the experiments that previously demanded entire teams of junior engineers to execute. Clark said the returns on seasoned intuition now far outweigh the routine output the technology quietly absorbs, freeing senior staff for the harder calls.
Others paint a darker picture. CEO Dario Amodei has warned that AI could erase half of all entry-level white-collar jobs, and unemployment among recent college graduates has already climbed to 5.7%, well above its pre-pandemic mark of 3.6%.
Clark stays more guarded, but not dismissive. Several of his own colleagues, he noted, quietly expect the technology to render their jobs redundant inside a handful of years, a fear he takes seriously. He frames their conviction as a warning worth studying, since those same researchers correctly called the breakneck pace of AI for several years running.

His careful tone fits a firm that is already bracing, in public, for real upheaval. This month Anthropic pledged $350 million toward displaced workers and economic research, paired with a fellowship that pays 1,000 early-career hires to embed at nonprofits and learn the tools.
That sum barely dents a firm now valued close to a trillion dollars. Clark presses governments to plan for outcomes stranger than any recession. Amodei, in a same-week essay, pushed harder still, calling severe job loss possibly unavoidable and floating a basic income funded by taxes on the firms driving it.
