Dogecoin (DOGE) closed August with a 21.4% gain, its strongest month of 2026 and its first positive return after three straight monthly declines.

Key Points:

  • Dogecoin returned 21.4% in August, its best monthly showing of 2026.
  • The rally stalled near $0.0996 after sellers defended the $0.10 level.
  • Open interest and volume have both cooled since the peak.

Dogecoin August Return Arrived Late

Market data showed the monthly return at 21.4% as of Aug. 29, reversing months of flat to negative trade. Almost none of the gain came early. DOGE was up just 0.9% on Aug. 17, then climbed from roughly $0.069 two days later toward the $0.10 mark inside a single week.

The token peaked near $0.0996, about 44% above its August floor, before sellers turned it back at that psychological threshold. It surrendered close to 14% from the high and traded near $0.083 on Tuesday, leaving a market value of about $12.9 billion and a ranking of 12th among all digital assets.

Derivatives Demand Cools

Nothing in the Dogecoin protocol explains the size of the move, and analysts point instead to a broad rotation back into speculative altcoins. Renewed appetite for Dogecoin-linked investment products added to the bid. Derivatives positioning has since thinned, with perpetual futures open interest that fell to about 15.7 billion DOGE on Aug. 28, down from 17.3 billion six days earlier.

Daily trading volume contracted just as sharply over the same stretch, sliding to $1.5 billion from $5.2 billion on Aug. 23. John Isige, who tracked the positioning data, wrote that a sustained drop in retail interest would point to fading demand across the market.

DOGE Price Levels To Watch

Momentum readings still lean constructive, with the RSI near 63 and the MACD holding above zero. The 200-day exponential moving average near $0.095 marks the next barrier, while support sits at the 100-day line around $0.082. Bitcoin (BTC) traded near $78,000 through the closing sessions of the month, steadying the wider market.

Whether $0.10 gives way on a second attempt now sets the terms of the argument for traders. Another rejection would leave August looking like a bounce inside a longer downtrend rather than the opening leg of a durable recovery.

The month ended three consecutive losses for the token. Dogecoin fell 5.9% in May, then dropped 28.3% in June and another 3.4% in July, a stretch that pushed it to a 52-week low near $0.0679. It remains down roughly 27% since January, and reaching its 2025 high of $0.1551 would require a further gain of close to 80%.
