Ethereum (ETH) exchange balances have fallen close to 10% since January, yet the price of the second largest cryptocurrency remains pinned near $1,900.

Key Points:

  • Aggregate exchange reserves are down roughly 1.74 million coins so far this year.
  • Stablecoin deposits on Binance are rotating away from Tron and toward Ethereum.
  • Spot Ether funds took in about $245 million in the week ended Aug. 7.

Ethereum Exchange Reserves Drain As Staking Locks Coins

Onchain data from CryptoQuant shows aggregate exchange reserves at 15.12 million ETH, down from 16.86 million at the start of the year, a decline of about 1.74 million coins. Deposits and withdrawals by the ten largest holders are also running below their recent averages. Staking has climbed past 34% of circulating supply, roughly 41.4 million ETH, even as the seven day reward rate sits at a three year low.

Exchange traded funds are absorbing supply as well, and spot Ether products collected about $245 million in the week ended Aug. 7, their strongest stretch since April and a fifth straight week of inflows.

BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust accounted for more than 80% of that total, lifting cumulative net inflows across the US funds to roughly $11.46 billion.

Stablecoin Liquidity Rotates From Tron To Ethereum

Analyst CryptoOnchain flagged a parallel shift on Binance, where total stablecoin netflows averaged around $87 million a day over the past 14 days while the mix behind that figure changed sharply. Tether (USDT) reserves on Tron (TRX) at the exchange fell from about $1.4 billion to $709 million in roughly two weeks. Ethereum based USDT netflows rose 210% week over week, while USD Coin (USDC) inflows gained 114% over the same period.

That is not capital abandoning the market. The analyst read it as large holders and market makers repositioning collateral toward deeper decentralized finance liquidity, or ahead of volatility centered on Ethereum itself.

Van De Poppe Sees Range Until Demand Firms

None of it has moved the price so far. US spot demand, tracked through the Coinbase Premium Index, has stayed negative since early May, which suggests domestic buyers are not chasing the setup.

Network activity tells the opposite story, with weekly transactions above 20 million and new smart contract deployments climbing.

Michaël van de Poppe described the chart as unchanged, with ETH boxed between $1,800 and $2,000 and volatility near multi year lows. A clean break above $2,000, he suggested, could open a stronger move, though thinner float alone does not force one.

The stall caps a punishing stretch for holders. Ether changed hands near $2,116 in late May and set a record close to $4,953 in August 2025, leaving the token more than 60% below that peak. Exchange reserves have shrunk through most of that decline, which is why analysts keep framing the current squeeze as a condition rather than a trigger.
