Revolut customers in several countries lost access to roughly 30 services Tuesday, including card payments and transfers, in an outage linked to a power failure at Google Cloud's London region.

Key Points:

  • Revolut users in the U.K., Ireland, France, Spain and Japan lost access to card payments, transfers and log-ins on Tuesday.
  • The outage was linked to a power event at Google Cloud's London region, which also hit other U.K. banks.
  • Revolut said customer money and data were safe as engineers worked to restore service.

Revolut Outage Hits Cards

Users in the U.K., Ireland, France, Spain and Japan reported declined cards and error messages at log-in from Tuesday morning, while the bank gave no timeline for a fix. Unusually for a banking app failure, physical cards stopped working too.

Complaints on Downdetector spiked in the early hours, and many problems were still unresolved by late afternoon.

The bank's status page listed between 28 and 31 services as partially unavailable during the day, including transfers, ATM withdrawals, currency exchange, premium plans and account sign-ins. Revolut said on X that its engineers were working to restore full service as quickly as possible, and it stressed in a separate post that all customer money and data were safe.

Google traced the trouble to a power event in one zone of its europe-west2 region, which serves London, after reporting elevated errors and intermittent network failures early Tuesday. Most of its services were back shortly after midday, about six hours later. A person familiar with the matter linked Revolut's outage to the Google disruption, which also hit several other U.K. banks.

Feng Li Warns

Feng Li, associate dean for research and innovation at Bayes Business School in London, called the outage a reminder of "how deeply our economies depend" on just a handful of cloud providers. Neither Revolut nor Google has pointed to a cyberattack.

The failure hit one of Europe's biggest financial apps. Revolut says it has more than 80 million retail customers, with 13 million in the U.K., 6 million in Spain, 5 million in France and about 3.4 million in Ireland. Valued at $121.1 billion, it ranks as Europe's most valuable startup, and more than 750,000 companies use its business accounts.

The outage also follows two data incidents last month. Revolut disclosed that it handed sensitive information on about 680 customers to someone posing as a government authority, and some Irish customers were hit by a breach at DriveWealth, a third-party broker.

Tuesday's failure came exactly a year after an Amazon Web Services outage in Northern Virginia knocked out Lloyds Banking Group apps, Coinbase, Venmo and dozens of other services on Oct. 20, 2025. Amazon blamed DNS problems with its DynamoDB database service. Even Amazon's own website went offline at one point, along with Alexa speakers and Ring doorbells for some users.
