Ripple returned 700 million XRP (XRP) to escrow on Aug. 1 before the ledger released 1 billion tokens, cutting fresh supply to 300 million.

Key Points:

  • Two escrow locks covering 200 million and 500 million XRP cleared before the scheduled monthly release, reversing the usual order.
  • The unlock arrived in three portions of 500 million, 300 million and 200 million tokens, worth about $1.08 billion.
  • Net new supply held near 300 million tokens, and XRP settled around $1.0818 after bottoming near $1.0480.

Ripple Escrow Unlock Splits Into Three Tranches

Ledger records showed two escrow locks, one covering 200 million XRP and another covering 500 million, clearing on Aug. 1 before the scheduled monthly distribution reached the company.

The unlock then arrived in three portions of 500 million, 300 million and 200 million tokens, worth roughly $1.08 billion at prices that day. Tracking service Whale Alert flagged the transfers a day later.

That sequence reversed the usual routine, since the company normally waits until the days after a release to push unused tokens back into fresh contracts carrying later expiry dates. Ripple has returned 700 million tokens in every month of 2026, keeping the net addition near 300 million, which adds roughly 0.48% to the tokens in circulation.

August marked the eighth scheduled release of the year.

Gamza Khanzadaev Sees An August Floor For XRP

Analyst Gamza Khanzadaev called the early lock a preventive signal for investors who had braced for the seasonal selling that usually greets a fresh billion tokens. Moving most of the batch out first removed a supply overhang at the very start of a month that has treated the token badly for years. Traders now follow the lock transactions on the ledger as closely as they follow the unlock itself.

Released tokens pay for operations, liquidity services, developer grants and partnership incentives, so the net figure carries more weight for the market than the headline billion that circulates each month. Reaction to the August release stayed muted, in line with earlier ones this year, because the schedule is public and traders have long priced the monthly rhythm into their models.

XRP August Record Frames The Supply Debate

The escrow program dates to December 2017, when Ripple locked 55 billion XRP into contracts that expire one at a time on the first day of each month.

More than 32 billion tokens still sit under those arrangements, leaving circulating supply near 62.5 billion out of a fixed maximum of 100 billion. The locked stock has thinned steadily since the program began.

August has punished holders repeatedly, with XRP dropping 26.6% in 2023, falling 9.17% the following year and losing another 8.15% in 2025, against a median return of negative 6.15% across 13 years. The token has broken that rhythm so far this month, bottoming near $1.0480 late on Aug. 1 and settling around $1.0818, which left it up 1.93% after July's 2.11% gain.
