Spanish Banking Giant BBVA Secures Approval for Bitcoin, Ethereum Trading in Spain

Spanish Banking Giant BBVA Secures Approval for Bitcoin, Ethereum Trading in Spain

Spanish banking giant BBVA has received regulatory approval to offer Bitcoin and Ethereum trading services to its customers.

The approval, granted by Spain's financial authority, allows BBVA to launch a service enabling clients to buy, sell and manage cryptocurrency transactions through its mobile application. This development was confirmed in a Reuters report dated March 10, 2025.

BBVA customers will soon access Bitcoin and Ethereum trading directly through the bank's platform. The service aims to simplify cryptocurrency transactions for both retail and institutional clients.

"BBVA is stepping into crypto! The Spanish bank will launch a regulated Bitcoin & Ethereum trading service in 2025," announced crypto news outlet The Cryptonomist via social media.

The banking sector's integration with digital assets represents a significant shift in traditional finance. Cryptocurrency advocates have welcomed BBVA's move as an important step toward mainstream adoption.

Earlier this year, BBVA launched similar crypto trading services in Turkey through a local subsidiary. This expansion demonstrates the bank's strategy to enter markets with growing demand for digital assets.

The timing coincides with the implementation of MiCA across the European Union. MiCA provides a unified regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies, enhancing transparency, consumer protection and market stability. BBVA customers will engage with crypto assets under legal protections designed to reduce fraud and volatility risks.

BBVA's initiative in Spain builds upon its global cryptocurrency strategy. The bank has shown interest in markets where digital asset adoption is increasing.

The move signals growing acceptance of cryptocurrencies within traditional banking systems. Industry observers anticipate other major financial institutions may follow BBVA's approach as regulatory frameworks mature.

BBVA has not announced a specific launch date for the new services.
