DOGE Denies Claim It Has Disbanded, Says It Will Return 'In A Few Days'

The Department of Government Efficiency pushed back against a report claiming the agency had effectively shut down, insisting that President Donald Trump’s government-slimming unit remains active and will resume public updates later this week.

In a post on X, DOGE dismissed the report as “fake news,” saying it recently terminated 78 federal contracts and saved taxpayers $335 million, and added, “We’ll be back in a few days with our regularly scheduled Friday update.”

Reuters had reported earlier that the high-profile agency, launched in January as a signature initiative of Trump’s second term, was no longer operating as a “centralized entity,” according to Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor.

In comments to the outlet, Kupor said, “That doesn’t exist,” marking the first public acknowledgment from the administration that DOGE’s structure has shifted significantly.

The Reuters investigation outlined how many of DOGE’s functions have already migrated to the OPM, while several prominent DOGE staff members have taken on new roles across the federal government.

Internal documents reviewed by Reuters indicated that DOGE’s authority to shrink agencies, cut budgets, or redirect operations has been dispersed among traditional federal departments.

The report also detailed how former DOGE personnel, including those once associated with Elon Musk’s early management of the unit, have moved into other high-level positions.

Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb, now leads the National Design Studio after being tasked by Trump with improving the “visual presentation” of government websites, while other former DOGE members now hold senior roles across the Departments of Health and Human Services, State, and the Office of Naval Research.

Although Trump signed an executive order earlier in his term extending DOGE’s mandate through July 2026, the Reuters account noted that the president and his advisers increasingly refer to the agency in the past tense.

Core DOGE hallmarks, including a government-wide hiring freeze and centralized oversight of staffing exceptions, have also ended, Kupor told Reuters.

Despite this, the White House maintains that Trump continues to pursue his mandate of reducing waste, fraud, and abuse across the federal government.

“President Trump was given a clear mandate to reduce waste, fraud and abuse … and he continues to actively deliver on that commitment,” White House spokeswoman** Liz Huston** told Reuters.
